If you read the article you would not have to assume.
Both a board member knew and the janitor and the students were allowed to do it. And then when students protested the suspension the superintendent suspended 50 more students because they protested.
And this was a school tradition no less.
And with sticky notes. You can't get more harmless than this for a senior prank.

I did read the article, but does a janitor and/or a school board member, have the legal authority to allow children to tresspass on school grounds after school closes? I dont believe they do.. thats the job of the Superintendent.
Who would have been held responsible if some student fell and got injured after hours, because the schools insurance wouldnt have covered it.

But no one got hurt. Those 50+ suspensions were done after the fact and all over sticky notes.
The students didn't break into the school, they were let in.
It WAS a harmless prank, a tradition at that school. Why not let youth have their fun before they head out to the real world ?

A good case for TORT REFORM.
Too bad the entitlement crowd has ruined it for everyone. It's always someone else's fault.
Considering the criminal behaviors by youth in other areas of the country, these kids should be applauded. Glad it worked out for them. Bet there is a new Superintendent in the future.
Common sense has been totally eliminated by thousands upon thousands of stupid laws regulating everything we do anymore and they think the answer is yet another law or regulation. cause they care. now be obedient and do as the say its the law you know. If they passed a law saying you had to lick your tires before starting your car I know one person who would do it without question.
The problem with smiley faces is that at some point you run out of tax payers sticky notes.
Whose taxes we gonna raise to pay for that?
I hope you're kidding (I really can't tell if you are). The cost of a dozen sticky notes isn't going to break the bank. Aside from that, for all you know, the students bought the sticky notes themselves.
I think the punishment should've been for all involved to have to remove the Post-It notes and all that. Not a suspension (even a two day), and certainly not a firing!
Why were the doors locked during after school hours and since when do janitors get to decide when and who is allowed in after school hours? I think that he deserves some punishment along with the school board member who went along with it all.
The kids should have been "allowed" to undo the mess sometime when school was not session. Maybe the rest of the students could have been allowed to go outside and mess around while they cleaned up their mess.
The punishment was too severe but unless you have had to put up with a bunch of kids suffering from senioritis I wonder just how much you know about punishment and all that really should be determined.
The man was foolish in many ways but the janitor needed reprimanded and since that attempted firing was reported to be about something previous it may well have been right.

And what happens to them if they behave like that in the "real world". This sounds to me like one of those "teaching moments" our administration keeps talking about.
