The word 'necessary' is yours, not mine. I stated it used to be a requirement of survival. Marriage is still optimal however in today's society it is more difficult because enduring marriages are no longer the norm.

Individuals practice personal responsibility for their own lives, the cost of their care, retirement, etc... . They forge relationships, be it with friends or other family members, to help see them through the hard times or their later years instead of being dependant on government since they have no spouse or children upon whom to depend.

It's a personal choice. For a lot of people in the United States it has less of an appeal than in decades past.
