This is not a riddle, but there is a very simple answer: when it comes to the role of government, hardly any difference exists between the two. Sure, there are some differences in viewpoints, such as where tax money is allocated, and other social issues like same sex marriage, etc. ... however, there are a striking number of similarities which makes it difficult to tell the difference between the two sides.

* Both want an increased presence of government interference into people's personal lives

* Both favor an increased presence of government in the free market when it comes to certain types of businesses which they frown upon

* Both want more tax money to fund social programs

* Both are highly authoritarian with few or no Libertarian leanings

* Both seem to favor quotas

* Both tend to ignore the principles of the Bill of Rights

* Both seem to think procreation is a Constituitonal right

* Both tend to be highly emotional

* One is about as equally annoying as the other

Here's the best one:

* Both tend to base their opinions on personal faith, instead of intelligence, logic, or common sense

The last bullet point is quite interesting because when it comes to personal faith, many people automatically link that to social conservatives. However, the term "bleeding heart" actually came about as a Christ reference, originally the bleeding heart under a cross (representing the sufferings of Jesus crucified). In that sense, a bleeding heart liberal & a social conservative could be considered one & the same.

Even on hot button social issues like abortion, social conservatives favor an overwhelming amount of waiting periods, restrictions, and regulations (similar to what many bleeding heart liberals favor for gun ownership). In this example, a lot of social conservatives are really just bleeding heart liberals in sheep's clothing (and vice versa).

Nothing.

Another good point. They are exactly the same conceptually. The specific beliefs are really irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, and the parallels between the two are obvious to any objective thinker.

Ask a social conservative what's so bad about gay marriage and ask a liberal what's so great about diversity, and you'll get pretty much the same answer.

There are numerous components of modern day liberalism just as dogmatic if not more so than any religion.

Social conservatives and bleeding heart liberals also want a lot of protectionism, and often claim it's "for the children", or to save everybody from themselves. The only kind of protectionism for children should be the full responsibility of the parents ... not the government, and not the taxpayers. When kids play with loaded guns or drown in swimming pools, no amount of government protection is going to stop those unfortunate incidents. The parents are the only ones who can take measures to prevent those occurrences by utilizing a little more supervision and responsibilty on their part.

This is a HUGE common sense post that will be glossed over by 99% of the regular posters on here. Almost all the posters on here do not want to admit or acknowledge, they are more similar to each other than they realize. Whatever the end, the outcome will always be the same.

Another good observation.

The funny part is that both sides will do so while they lambast the other side for doing the same.

What's the difference between a bleeding heart liberal and a social conservative? ......
I suppose about the same difference as Neocon Republicans and the Communist Party!
