The South lost and then we needed to throw a holiday after that to celebrate our long history of war mongering. Our warmongering is certainly memorable and nothing to be proud about.
I agree to the OP to a point... And I am a Veteran. We are a warmongering nation with no respect for other countries' sovereignty and we think we can do no wrong. The American people are made to believe everything we do is right because we are the ones doing it.
With that being said most people who serve do so because they believe in protecting their country and they die believe they are doing so. I just feel bad for those who died in Iraq like a few friends of mine. It was a useless war, based on lies. Thousands of fallen and wounded Americans and Iraqis... And for what? I am not bashing the Troops by the way. I am bashing the A-holes in Washington who send them to die for nothing. (yes I know it is a voluntary thing but it doesn't make it right)
Well that's not what Memorial Day is about is it?? It has NOTHING to do with the A-HOLES in Washington...or about who started what war...or anything else. It's about American Service men & women who fought and DIED for this country...regardless of the Idiots who run it. They died fighting for US. Nothing more need be said.
Sorry...I just prefer that the other aspects of the arguments about wars we have fought and the why's and the who's just be left out of it for this ONE DAY to remember those who died.
In the 1950s my family considered it a day to go to the cemetery where our dead family members were buried and trim around the tombstone and leave potted plants on the graves. Yes, there were Memorial Day ceremonies at the local monument to the Civil War (called the Great Rebellion on the monument) dead....which had been amended to include the dead from later wars, but it had a relatively small attendance.

I used to be naive and think Carter had a good foreign policy, but he loved his dictators and Brzezinski was worse than Kissinger. In fact, it was Brzezinski and Carter who first started to fuel the Taliban, not Reagan.
Anyways, I am rambling. However, I am not a fan of our foreign policy. I wish our Department of Offense would be renamed to the Department of Defense.
It would save a lot of lives and prevent a lot of suffering. Unfortunately, many Americans cannot handle criticism of their own foreign affairs which get carried out in a complete absence of their vote, and all in the name of patriotism.
