Now a new DNA study in the Journal of Genetic Genealogy attempts to separate truth from oral tradition and wishful thinking. The study found the truth to be somewhat less exotic: Genetic evidence shows that the families historically called Melungeons are the offspring of sub-Saharan African men and white women of northern or central European origin.

This is gonna upset the racists on both sides. Sheesh!

I never believed the whole Turkish thing. Not too may Turks came to the USA before the Industrial period. Portuguese for that matter as well.

I always believed this:

Quote:
Estes and her fellow researchers theorize that the various Melungeon lines may have sprung from the unions of black and white indentured servants living in Virginia in the mid-1600s, before slavery.
They conclude that as laws were put in place to penalize the mixing of races, the various family groups could only intermarry with each other, even migrating together from Virginia through the Carolinas before settling primarily in the mountains of East Tennessee.
But try debating people whose only basis for their views is what their grandparents told them. You'll get no where fast and it becomes a waste of time.

There you go trying to spoil the OP's perfectly good attempt at race-baiting.

After I posted the story; I read back over it and have to agree. My choice of words was to make a point and it didn't come out right. Couldn't change it cause I posted from home and was at work today.

My family in Kentucky referred to them being mixed European and native american.

Portuguese though? Where and why would they think that? lol.

Looking at the last names of these people....

Perkins - English

Simmerman - German (Probably an Anglicized version of Zimmermann)

Goins - English(?)

"Claims of Portuguese ancestry likely were a ruse they used in order to remain free and retain other privileges that came with being considered white, according to the study's authors."

It was the same with "Creoles" in New Orleans, especially those in the 7th Ward.

Look at the article: the Melungeons ain't real happy about being proven part Black tho it's no big deal to most Americans in 2012. 150 years ago it WAS a big deal.

I am sure it would be a "big deal" to many in this country who don't realize they have black ancestry. Make no mistake, there are many. Imagine a member of the KKK or skinhead discovering his or her great-great-grandparent was an African slave. They would probably commit suicide.
