I was thinking about this the other day while watching a College Womens' Softball game, and it had me wondering why women don't play hardball. If we preach equality, why is it so many of our institutions are promoting sexism? High-school sports have independent teams for men and women, often with different rules, and sometimes no sports for women at all. We instill upon our children from a young age that women aren't equal through this very act alone. My wrestling team in high-school only ever had one female wrestler (the rest of the females on the team were managers). She only did the program because it offered the best workout of all the sports.

KUChief's thread on the All-female nuclear sub reminded me that I wanted to discuss the subject, because it's pretty important.

Shouldn't we be getting away from a patriarchal culture? How can we do so if even the most trivial of our institutions actively promote sexism like this?

How do we promote equal opportunity when we don't actually have equal opportunity?
