When I was on them, I was responsible and kept myself healthy. I did buy a very low cost bag or two of chocolate to spread out over the month. Unfortunately not everyone is as responsible. I said even then, that the amount of non-nutritional things (including soda) should be LIMITED, not excluded. Even those in need, crave a treat.

The real issue, is that soda companies would go crazy...they spend tons of dollars, doing lobbying...

Our system is not run based on sense, it is run based on who ever pays the most money.

Food stamps are supposed to be an assist, a bailout, a bottom line effort to feed the hungry.

Why would people in this situation need soda when water will do?

All junk food should be eliminated from the food stamp program. Generic products and products limited by price per pound is what should be on the menu of a food stamp recipient.

There is so much widespread abuse that while third generation welfare recipients sit around getting fat doing nothing and living high off the hog there are children of families struggling to find a job and going to bed hungry every night.

We need to get business out of politics and millionaires doing the bidding of those businesses out of office.

I like how you put that..."limited".

Growing up, we didnt have food stamps but had times where my parents were VERY bad off. There was one summer in particular I remember that Ramen noodles, pasta, lard broth, and potatoes were the main staple. I don't think "poor" people of today would understand what was what life growing up poor in the 70's was like, with all the safety nets out there now, and they believe everything should just be handed to them.

The far and few between treats were nice, and made me appreciate them more, to be less wasteful when I did have them, and to learn you have to work for what you have. It's just so suprising that folks on food stamps get this stuff just handled to them. I still remember the joy I have when I finally for the first time in years had steak as a teenager. I still have that habit of knawing on the bone and eating all the fat due to never having it growing up, and being so poor we ate everything. Will the kids today even understand that experience?

If I didn't know at least 7 people in my personal life who can work, but refuse to, I probably wouldn 't be so bitter. For example, my one sister refuses to work, and gets almost $600 a month in stamps for her and her three boys. She always has an excuse why she can't go out and get a job, and is always blowing through her child support and government support. They eat better than my husband and I do, and we work for a living. However, the kids in these families will never, ever learn how to not leach off the system if they are no taught how to manage money or how to earn it/keep it. My sister's children are the most wasteful kids I have ever seen with food. They will not even take a bite of their food, and demand something else. They enjoy having food fights, opening up a can of soda then taking a sip and leaving the rest to be thrown out, and my personal favorite picking and choosing what will go on their plate (they refuse to eat vegetables). This is your tax dollars at work folks. Honestly, if she was given a ration by the government and recipes how to cook it, I believe she would have no choice but to force her kids to eat what they have and not be so wasteful. Or forced to get a job...perish the thought!

I honestly think the people who are for not controlling the distribution of food stamps honestly don't know of all the people abusing the system. Like I said, there are at least 6 families within my extended family doing it, all with a minimum of 2 kids (I counted 19 kids total between these 7 people). I'm not proud of my family at all, and to hear them talk they BRAG about how much they are able to get off the government. Three of these 6 familes are married couples - you are talking 28 people you tax dollars are supporting, and this is just in one county, in one extended family, in one state. This is a huge problem and a money suck! I didn't even count the friends of these folks...

Ramen noodles didn't kill me, and it sure as heck wouldn't kill these folks!

For that matter, should bottled water be allowed? Why should something that costs pennies out of a tap be covered by food stamps when it costs huge multiples more than tap water?
Depends on the state. By your logic the poor in Utah would starve. Utah taxes groceries. All groceries.

Yes, yes.

My Mother raised me on her own. She wasn't on food stamps but did require the assistance of Section 8 Housing. My Mother worked her tail off. She taught me the same values. I see parents of children these days and simply sigh and cringe. At 40, I was required to swallow my pride and bite the bullet. I didn't feel too bad afterwards knowing I had put 25 years of hard work and taxes into the system. Because from day 1, I of course, was determined to get back to work. Afterall the state of the economy is not the fault of me or the millions still out of work.

At 42, I'm obviously, luckily enough, back to work.

I love the comment "Ramen Noodles" aren't so bad! Really? Loaded with salt with no nutritional value? You know what is funny is that "food stamp" receipients probably get better nutrional advice than the average American. Somebody is keeping our fast food chains afloat along with obesity in America and it certainly isn't "food stamp" receipients! since they can't use their EBT cards at such places!

Costco had to start taking food stamps last year. There are more and more in line that are helping their bottom line.
