Because, as other groups of people in this country, Gays have to fight for their rights. And it makes for good media coverage which translates into ratings which in turn converts into $.
The churches are LOVING this theme. Gets the pastors to PREACH the word of God! Preach hate and scare people into not committing sins, or they will end up in HELL. You don't want to end up in hell, right? Don't worry, we will keep you on track...and you can't loose your faith! So all the preaching translates into full churches with a bunch of people looking for guidance from pastors preaching hate. But it makes for juicy controversial subject themes, which in reality keeps everyone entertained. All that talk about sex, sins and hell, pretty exciting, huh? It's better than any reality show on TV! Full churches equals $.
People were motivated to vote to ban this. The conservatives were determined and energized.
Sue who's for it, is not going to go out of her way to vote, she has to work and pick up the kids.

That's the problem with states allowing ignorant people to vote on other citizen's rights. Voters do not have any credentials, professional training, degrees, expertise in law or any medical field or in science, to determine what rights people gay people should have. I can't believe that our country allows this.
I can bet you the majority of those same voters don't even know American History all that well.
Rights should be determine by the courts...period.
Gays brought the fight to the American people.
They should have been sure to have the overwhelming support that you claim they do.
How much would the therapy cost? If it were a few hundred or few thousand dollars, I'm very sure most people would rather pay the money (if they choose to do it at all) than to abort their baby.
and unless everyone is voting on marriage for EVERYONE that AUTOMATICALLY makes such a vote unconstitutional.
also, i find it fully that straight people with NO RISK OF LOSING that right are claiming it's not a right.
