Surveys show a shockingly high fraction think a quarter of the country is gay or lesbian, when the reality is that it's probably less than 2 percent.
Politics - Garance Franke-Ruta - Americans Have No Idea How Few Gay People There Are - The Atlantic

Does it matter? We are still American citizens.

The average American isn't that educated or worldly. A lot of people haven't bothered to educate themselves. Only a little more than a quarter have a college degree. That's one of the lowest rates of any first world country.

Plenty of them think that Jesus rode on a dinosaur to church not long ago. I'm not surprised that people don't have an idea for how many gay people there are in the country.

The number/ percentage is close to what I would think.
I've known that it certainly hasn't been the 10% mythical number thrown about.

I know. I also know how even fewer transexual people their are yet it sometimes feels like we have been invaded by the planet Tranny.

I'm being glib on purpose. I understand the way acceptance and awareness works is by saturating everyones field of sight with something and it's usually for a good purpose. But recognizing that makes it hard for me to take it seriously when there are actual SERIOUS issues being shoved to the back becasue they are too hard to deal with. This is why the gay cause will never be my cause. I "support" things by not giving a crap or putting up legal roadblocks but I won't expend much energy on it.

The most credible estimate is 4%.

Williams Institute Report Reveals 9 Million Gay, Bisexual or Transgender Americans - ABC News

But it really doesn't matter in the long run. Social conservatives like to say that because gays are a small minority, we should disregard them and think of them as a fringe group, and that their rights don't matter. This just shows what bigots they are.

4% is not accurate at all. Out of 1,500 people, there might be one hiding. I don't even think there is one. They aren't brave enough to show themselves.

Not surprised that the numbers are over-estimated. They make a big noise and the media adds to the clamor for them.
