No offense, but a bit peeved as the Enterprise specifically had been promised to us by NASA for a decade, and then Obama stuck his foot in last minute and decided to send it some where else.
That doesn't change my mind - but I would take Oregon over New York.

I assume it would have been put outside like the Saturn V rocket. I'm sure they planned for it in some way, shape or form.

Because that went so well.

Uh.... have you been to Houston Space Center Lately? I was there two years ago, the Saturn V is safely enclosed in a nice climate controlled building and has been at least repainted to it's original colors.

And no... they didn't plan for it at all. They ended up not even being in the running for one due to that fact.

Shuttles are far too complex, expensive to maintain and not as safe. It's cheaper, more efficient and safer to use capsules.

I'm well aware of the crew safety features on a rocket, most people don't realize that "pointy thingy" on the front serves a purpose.

All I know is that if it was in Texas, it would not be floating down a river on a barge.

Yeah...it would MUCH safer on the Gulf Freeway!

I don't think you're following events. The SLS heavy launcher is being developed as per NASA's standard system of making sure everybody gets a slice of the pie and no important Congresscritter's district is left out. The actual appropriation legislation goes into technical details, because - as we all know - Congresspeople are highly qualified as spacecraft designers as well. So, rest assured, US senator Kay Baylee Hutchison (who hates SpaceX) will see to it that Houston gets those Gvt. checks. (It's called the "Senate Launch System" for a reason.)

Yeah, I was trying to agree with you there... Most spacecraft designers also take some care to have the heat shield out of the way of ice from the cryogenics.

I think the more important part about that is it's a small area so there is less points of failure to begin with and doesn't have to be reusable which opens the doors to more other materials that are easier to design.
