"With the United States and Nato set to leave Afghanistan over the next two years, power is the region is shifting. Writer Ahmed Rashid reports on Russia and China's attempts to capitalise on the decline of American influence in Pakistan and Afghanistan."
Good... they will be next to get their clocks cleaned.
Oil. The US depends on other countries trading oil in US dollars. If they don't have to hold US dollars in reserve then we are toast. It has been this way since we went off gold back in the seventies and pegged the dollar to oil.

Cheap oil certainly is in our interests, but it is to the Chinese, Europeans and any other modern economy too.
What's your point? And, just how has Obama left that on the table, especially given that we're pumping more domestic oil right now than we have in decades and have just about weaned ourselves off oil from the Middle East?
The only thing Russia wants from Afganistan is to stop their heroin from getting into Russia. Afgan drug trade to Russia, China and Europe increased 40-something fold since this NATO invasion.
The only way Russia will deal with this problem is by bombing the hell out of Talib (long-time Afgan rebels) farms. Ground forces won't be used.
Aside from the drug trade, Russia has no serious interest in Afganistan. Can't say anything about China, but I don't see what interest they may have in these lands, other than stopping drug trade.

My point?? Countries have to purchase oil using US dollars.
Just what Russia needs, more Islamic terrorist targeting them for attack.
The source of terrorist attacks on Russia is America. Hopefully, you cleansed yourself most (remaining) terrorists you created.
