There are only a few hundred thousand Russian-born people in the U.S. - that's not much for many decades, that included brutal periods.

Most of that immigration has happened since 1991. The US got very loose and generous with its immigration visas in Eastern Europe, as a sort of proof that they "won" the Cold War.

Soviet times even the opposite happened, when the most stubborn critics of the government were kicked out to Europe.
Soviet Union lost lots of people who could have worked there and made our country more prosperous, but were forced to go to Europe or the USA. Nuriev is the best example.

But even heterosexual artists left Soveit Union because they did not have freedom and the same working conditions as in Europe or the USA. Freedom is a cruicial thing for every artisitc person.

It's untrue that only 1990s Russians went to the West. Lots of young people from Russia still want to go to some other country. Most of them are straight.

But it's also untrue that there were no homophobia in the USA, there were a lot of it, even in 1970s. Not a long time ago.

There was a gay pride in Israel. There were lots of aggresive religiuos people there, but the police done well and everything was no so bad.

In Moscow I haven't see any crowds of people protesting against gay prides. Only some clowns in strange dark clothes and big beards.

Besides, there is a Singapore variant - no gay-prides, but gay relatioship can be registred officially.
If gay couple would have an opportunity to register officially, they will have the same real estate rights as straigh couples. The real estate is very expensieve so it's a real problem.

I am not interested in gay prides and have wayward feelings about gay activists, but if a man is straight he sholud thing about his own problems, not about gays. So I do not understand those straight Russians who sit in the Net wasting their time on discussing gays. Very idiotical.

This gay propaganda thing is total bull***t. If a man is gay, he is gay. Some can be bi. Some can pretend that they are straight, but have sex with gays for money. But it is their own choice. Alchocol and cigaretes are much worse tha gay sex.

And why Russian gays should go anythere? It's our homeland. A man could be gay and have patriotic feelings. It's very silly to alienate a person because he or she is LGBT.

I agree that many Russians do not want to live in the US. However, I disagree that many Russians don't want to leave Russia. I won't say "most" like you do because I cannot speak for 70+ million people; I can only go by the dozens of Russian friends and colleagues I know personally.

I completely disagree that Russians are "extremely individualist". The herd mentality is very strong in Russian society.

Do you think Russians are like sheep who cannot think for themselves? In another thread you defended Russians' intelligence, and now you are saying that these people can't make their own decisions about which country to live in?
Not only that, but you blame the US for promoting itself?
Interesting.

Well, it does cost quite a lot of money to leave to another country. I would surmise that many more Russians would emigrate (and would have emigrated) if they had the financial resources.
