I worked long and hard for years only now to collect what is rightfully mine.
And how dare they touch this.
THE CHANCES OF ANY president doing away with SS is slim to nill,it's so embedded in American life now.
But this sentence struck me.You worked long and hard and they already did touch your money. They did it a little at a time but think about how much money that adds up to in the course of several years. Why? so they could give it back to you in measly amounts, dictate how you can use it?Can you leave SS as a inheritance to who you wish?
Yes how dare they touch it,to begin with...it's your money, you could have made alot more by investing it,but they don't see it as your money, they see it as theirs, though they didn't work for it...on top of that the government can't even manage it well.
Whatever SS I get is what I put in and not you!!! I worked for 40 years and I'm entitled to every dime that was taken out of my pay!!!!!
yes you are,but we need to get rid of a system that makes people rely on government.....you are not free when this system takes from you and you have no say so.
People are due their money, but for the future the system needs changing, actually just get rid of the system.
Okay, yes the SS system has been in trouble for quite some time.
There was money before Bush took over. Clinton Balanced the budget with a surplus to boot.
Where is that surplus now???????????
Actually, Elizamary, Congress balanced the budget, Clinton just signed off on it. I know this cause my Constitution tells me so. And, ahemm... that was a republican congress.
Yes, and the rest of us are thrilled that at the present rate those of us paying into it are going to get screwed and may never see a dime.
Don't fret over your precious self. We're footing the bill for you now with huge doubts on whether anyone will EVER do the same for us....
Perhaps you'll see the light, then, and demand that the President's plan for private retirement accounts be revisited. Wouldn't you love the chance to invest your own money, tax-free, rather than turn it over to some federal money pot that you may not ever even see? After all, even with mediocre returns (6-8 percent per year), you'll be comfortable come retirement time.
Let's do some quick and very dirty math. Let's say you're 30 years old, and earn $50,000 per year, and your annual salary increase is 5%. If you are permitted to invest 10% of your annual salary at an average return of 7%, you'll have well over a million bucks when you're 65. AND IT'LL BE ALL YOUR MONEY.
Lots of folks have plans like this already. They're called 401k or 403b, or other types of IRA. You can be sure that every member of Congress -- you know, the ones who accused Bush of eating their children when he DARED to suggest that every American have a crack at some real money instead of chump change -- EVERY member of Congress ha s a sweetie-pie retirement plan much like the one that Bush proposed for all taxpayers.
News Bulletin to those who have been impersonating lawn ornaments -- SOCIAL SECURITY WAS NEVER INTENDED TO BE YOUR SOLE SOURCE OF RETIREMENT INCOME. It was a safety net for the indigent and (dare we say it?) imprudent among us who somehow believed that the tooth fairy was going to make a big comeback and reward us for our dentures in old age. Or something.
Will Social Security survive in its current form? No way. Some form of tax increases and/or benefit cuts will have to occur. And some politician is going to have to show some real leadership and drag the people into freeing up their retirement choices to include modest individual retirment accounts. It only make sense.
Because Bush suggested it, a lot of otherwise intelligent folks let themselves be stampeded into rejecting it out of hand. The fact remains, however: individual retirement accounts are the only hope for a secure future for anyone under 35 who isn't already wealthy.
I agree with some of the posters that stated SS will not effect the ones that are too old to do anything. Pretty much at least 55 on up. Maybe 50 on up.
Also, I know the surplus was not ss surplus. What I meant was clinton balanced the budget. If there is an argument on this, I will say, no other president in recent years came close.
SS needs an overhaul and something needs to be done. Immigrants should not be sponging off our goverment.
But
I don't trust Bush to handle the change in SS. Everything he touches turns to do do.
Of course, the die hard bu****es will never see this and I dont' care because it is too late.
The country is already in a mess and you can't deny this. If you can then you are blind.
I would like to know why our goverment targets the poor, children and elders?
Also, I paid into SS for years so the elders before me can have something to live off. Now it is time for the younger workers to pay my way.
That is just how it works.
For years, I had no choice. Now it is my turn to reap the benefit.

That is not generally true. Very few people get "what they put in" from social security. I personally will be surprised if I ever see a dime of the tens of thousands of dollars I have put into the social security system. The money I am putting in NOW is going to someone else -- and I doubt I'll ever see it.

I will ask you again elizamary, what "plan" or proposal(s) have the democrats brought forth to "fix" social security? Have the Democrats done ANYTHING??

It is amazing how many people "contribute" to social security - 20/30/40 years (or more) then die before they get a dime - and how much does their family get? Zip

That won't be "how it works" for long, Elizamary. The current system is unsustainable, and we all know it. Excuse us "younger workers" for not wanting to "pay your way" when we know that no one will be paying ours.
Social security cannot continue as it is today. I think in the future we can all expect a steady reduction and eventual elimination of payments.
You can't squeeze blood from a turnip.
