Many liberals here like to carp that the tax code unfairly favors the rich while punishing the poor. Well when you consider that the top 1% pays 38% of all federal income taxes, the top 5% pays in excess 60% of all taxes, and the top 10% accounts for more than 70% of taxes collected, how exactly is it that the tax code favors the poor? If 10% of taxpayers pay 70% of taxes, then that means that 90% pay only 30% of the tax burden. That's not to mention the bottom 49.5% who not only pay zero taxes, but end up receiving money in the form of tax rebates and public assistance. So effectively their tax burden is negative, as in they receive taxes. So it seems to me, if anyone, the tax code benefits the poor the most as they pay the least yet receive the most, and unfairly punishes the rich as they pay the most taxes yet consume the least public goods. Is the system unfair because after paying their taxes, the rich are still rich? Should the rich be taxed until they are in poverty so that only the ruling class is rich and everyone is dependent upon the ruling class for sustenance? It seems to me, liberals are just bitter that the rich are rich, without the help of government, and despite all of the confiscatory taxes forced upon them. Do liberals think taxing the rich into poverty will improve society? Do they think making the rich poor will make the poor rich? Discuss.

The top 1% paying that much taxes is a big deal right? Except you conveniently left out some data there didn't you?

The top 1% of income earners take in 24% of all income and control 40% of the nations wealth. Of course they pay 38% of all federal income tax. They make so damn much money that they individually pay a lot of taxes. It's not a really large part of their income though.

Have you traveled anywhere where there is a big disparity between the rich and the poor? Have you examined the costs that society has to deal with when poor people are desperate and can't get basics like food and health care.

The rich benefit plenty by having social programs in place. It means that there is infrastructure in place so that their business can operate. It means that there is an educated (ie know what paragraphs are and now to use them) workforce available and that they won't be continually robbed by desperate people looking for food.

The taxing the rich into poverty is rather silly. The tax rates that people are talking about here are rather nominal to people in that tax bracket and very competitive with the rest of the world.

Actually, no.

The real complaint is the tax code favors the rich while punishing the middle class.

OP, your argument will fall on deaf ears. They've accepted the conclusions of others as a matter of blind faith, and they will argue the gospel of their religion until the day they die. They're unable to formulate an intellectual rebuttal to your post, because it can't be done.

The "tax the rich" attitude encourages the rich to create wealth, not income, and we dont tax wealth. Furthermore, we dont build infrastructurue for the rich, we build them for the benefit of society, ALL of society.

Instead of rich vs poor the real (and never discussed) tax battle is parents vs non-parents. because of generous child tax credits a middle class family with several children is likely to be in the 47% who pay no income tax. A single mother, even if she has a good job, is almost certainly a non-tax payer. While a childless worker is very likely to be a tax payer even if they earn a low income.

You have dodged the taxation issue and gone straight to the income issue, which demonstrates thaat you can't stand our economic system. You are practically screaming for prohibitions against the rich making their money. The redistribution system is already in place, but you aren't satisfied until our country becomes third world. Thank you for exposing your disgusting logic and your hatred of our system.

In this country the poor and lower income working folks may not pay income tax but the do pay just about all the other regressive taxes like sales, excise, property, fuel and anything else the rich have used to shift the tax burden from themselves. I would like to see all these taxes eliminated and be replaced with an Income (all income from all sources counted) and Wealth (financial as well as property) tax proportionally distributed on all income above the 90th percentile and wealth above the 95th. That would place the burden of maintaining the country on the people that actually own it.
