I read an article recently regarding Congress wishing to expand the Childrens' Health Insurance Program (CHIP) to include more low-to-moderate income families who couldn't afford to provide health insurance for their children. The funding for this would largely come from increasing the tax on a pack of cigarettes to $1.

President Bush has vowed to veto Congress's plan saying "it's too expensive." Really, Mr. President? You don't seem too concerned about the BILLIONS of our tax dollars you continue to waste in Iraq because you can't admit that you made a mistake by invading a nation with no credible ties to 9/11. It seems as if you are okay with Congress issuing you a blank check for the war efforts, yet when they attempt to make life better DOMESTICALLY, you balk? What gives?

I feel as if the health of an underpriviledged child in our own nation takes precedence over building cell phone towers in Iraq or pondering invading Iran because "we don't like them." I'm likewise outraged that coastal LA and MS remain war zones more than TWO YEARS after Katrina hit while FEMA cries "poverty" in trying to help our OWN PEOPLE while President Bush continues to spend our money in this senseless war. Why? Where are his priorities? Millions in our own nation are SUFFERING simply because he can't admit he was mistaken in his efforts to invade a nation based upon "faulty intelligence."

For President Bush to consider any program geared towards improving the lives of his constituency to be "cost-prohibitive" certainly speaks volumes about his character and about the priorities of those who continue to support him. You don't see him apologizing for wasting all of our money in this conflict, do you?

It's hard to get outraged over Bush after all this time, because he's long demonstrated that he is a contemptable human being and an even worse president. But this really is despicable. He is going to screw over the neediest children in this country for a program that not only works, but has legitimate bipartisan support because it's "too expensive." Meanwhile he'll asking for another 100 billion for our indefinite stay in Iraq shortly.

Like someone said in another thread -- if this bill had been for health insurance for Iraqi children, he would have signed it.

But gee, raising the tax on a pack of cigarettes might upset the tobacco $$$ lobby. And what region of the US is most tobacco grown in? Couldn't upset those people now could we?

And let's face it, child healthcare doesn't provide the same opportunities to swagger around on the deck of an aircraft carrier spewing sound bites as a good old fashioned invasion/occupation does. The man does have his priorities.

Maybe he thinks that protecting the country from foreign enemies is a way of "improving the lives of his constituency" (with "constituency" defined as all the citizens of the US, not just those who support him).

Just a thought -- on the rare chance that the President is not simply evil personified and the reincarnation of Satan. Or something equally awful.

You are never going to get a calm rational discussion from the people who have this intense hatred of Bush. That’s all they see, like a red flag in front of a bull. What are they going to do after a couple of presidents and congress come and go and the problems are still there or worse?

I thought Bush was "improving the lives of his constituents". You know the constituents that are making all the money profiteering off this war. We are not giving all that money to Iraqis; we are giving it to good old American contractors. Why should he care about health insurance for working class kids? When did they ever make huge contributions to his party? When do the kids ever tell him what a great fellow he is? Just look at the financial, political and, most importantly, personal feedback loops to understand what this man does. He really is that simple. He does what his friends praise him for doing

Personally I don't like to see taxes raised on anything most of the time. But this time it seems very legitimate, using the money for a good reason, while at the same time raising the burden of being a smoker to a point where people seriously have to consider quitting completely or cutting back. This would have a net effect of reducing burden on our health system, considering the massive amount of health issues that this country has due to tobacco use.

I wouldn't mind spending money in Iraq if it seemed there was a clear direction that we were headed. That doesn't seem to be the case. The Iraqi government is slow in meeting goals and benchmarks, and the cost to America keeps going up everyday. I would imagine that the trillion spent on this war could have been better used in preventative measures at home to protect us from terrorist threats.
