The extreme "right" elements of the GOP, including the Tea Party folks, frequently rail against the food stamp programs. Unnecessary, or wasteful hand-outs to people who should learn to boot-strap themselves to greater successes in life. Or other similar arguments. While I wouldn't argue that state administration of the food stamp programs couldn't or shouldn't be improved to eliminate waste, isn't it people most often associated with or identified as principal supporters of the GOP who are reaping a windfall ... federal government subsidization of their businesses ... forms of corporate welfare ... as a direct result of the food stamp programs?
Food Politics is featuring a story entitled,
"Who benefits most from food stamps? Follow the Money." The article suggests that big business reaped $72 billion in subsidization last year ("welfare" payments). Multiply that number year in and year in out.
Go ahead, let the do-nothing GOP U.S. Congress restrict the food stamp programs. Then let's see how quickly their financial supporters come running, shouting "Not us!" And then let's watch the GOP base and Tea Party types walk away from the issue, sheepishly with their tails between their legs and embarrassed looks
The Democrats are missing a good issue to pursue as it seeks to lure more corporate support. A substantial reduction in the $72 billion annual subsidizes will get the attention of most.
