wtf talk about a total waste of money.

actually i bet someone stole the other 6411 dollars and just said they paid amazon kindles for 189.

actually right now if you buy the kindles for anywhere past 70-80 dollars you are getting ripped off big time.

the tablet is worth 189 or so right now not the kindles.

we to go smart managers stealing money basically.

oops.
they will likely say "nope im just incompetent not stealing. they say"

so they used 16.5 million on a 500k at retail price.
or lets say 33x the price they would have paid.

wtf 33x the price. scum bags of cronyism.

amazon should be sued along with anyone whom made that order.

Wonder if this is even real. This could be another hoax to outrage the tea party loons just like the fraudulent story of the supposed $10 muffins the govt was purported to have been buying for meetings. Of course the $10 muffins never even existed.

Shoot the messenger.....

State Department Chooses Amazon Kindle Over iPad, Nook - Government - Mobile & Wireless - Informationweek
Valued at up to $16.5 million over five years, the contract calls for an initial order of 2,500 Kindles, to be distributed to libraries, cultural centers, reading rooms, and other "American spaces" operated by the State Department, according to department spokeswoman.

Why is the U.S. State Department paying Amazon $16.5 million for 2,500 Kindles?

Let's try and read our own sources now eh?

Straight from the source quoted from your CNN link:

Quote:
State is willing to guarantee approximately $2.3 million in the first year for at least 2,500 Kindles and content, the spokesman said. It is waiting for Amazon to come back with a proposal for further negotiations.

The price per unit is currently being worked out. It is expected to be in the ballpark of a recent pilot program where State purchased 6,000 Kindles for $980,000 for educational and e-diplomacy purposes, which works out roughly to a cost of $163 for each device.

“State has not and will not spend even a penny more than retail prices,” said Philippe Reines, spokesman for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

There's really no story here, just grossly misrepresented facts from the original report by partisan hack think tanks like heritage that are intended to spread spin and disinformation.

Not paying more than retail price? Someone need to tell those in government that when you buy in bulk, you get HUGE discounts

Furthermore, if you read the stories, the cost was for more than just the Kindle device. So saying they wont pay more than retail is ridiculous when the cost per unit is 30 times the retail price.

happytexan for your information in 5 years that 189 kindle i assume is kindle tablet version because nothing else kindle is 189 right now.

would be worth less than 100 dollars or 50% off.

total waste of money to buy them in a long term contract for 5 years.

stupid actually.

they should be buying them every 1/2 year or 1 time every year instead. for each order.

price depreciates by 20-30% per year for these technology products until they get close to 50 dollars which then they slow down.

if you were the one making the purchase it is still stupid and reeks of cronyism even if they plan on buying 82500 kindles over 5 years.

price of kindles will drop fast as all technology does.

still a total waste of money.

they better be getting that 82500 kindle or more else it is a total waste of money.

yep 33 times the initial amount will be needed to make it even justify that.

reeks so much of cronyism.

here is there so called text to speech app they wanted so badly

on the android market to the dumb buffoons in washington.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....classic&hl=en

android there go flash the amazon kindle to a android and use it. bakas.
If I was running the show there they would all be fired for wasting money.

so they basically are paying amazon to develop a new text-to-speech app that is already made.

now amazon needs to basically copy or buyout these companies which already made the product.

yes stupid government.
