Interesting concept. Most americans agree that govt. spending should be cut, but when you ask them about independent programs the majority either think the programs should either get more money or have no change in spending. The only area that actually a majority of americans agree should be cut is aid to other countries.

However, most americans believe that raising taxes on the very wealthy is a good way to cut the deficit.

raise taxes on the wealthy

cut the salaries of our politicians

stop the practice of putting riders into our proposed laws (if this passes then X has to get $$$$ money).

most people dont understand the excessive waste in government spending programs, and the duplication of effort either. also most people think that cutting spending means that people want to eliminate programs, and that isnt the case either.

as to those who want to constantly tax the rich, they dont understand that the rich legally avoid paying taxes as much as they can. raise their taxes, and they will move to protect their money, or pass the costs on to others.

the point of the post is that most americans are not going to support defunding many of these programs to cut the debt; however, they will support raising the taxes on the wealthy.

that may be true, but my point is that BOTH are detrimental to the economy as a whole, and that the average person does not understand that.

I agree. The average person does not share your views.

We need the simpson/bowles plan. The far right hates and the far left hates it, so it does something right.

There's already almost nothing left to cut, so many cuts have already been implemented. Federal funding to states has been cut, Medicaid has been cut, funding for job training/re-training has been cut, unemployment benefit funding has been cut, support for education has been cut, the military has been cut. What remains to be done, possibly, is going over the budget with a fine-tooth comb to eliminate any pork, possibly examine further cuts to the military (ending the wars would help, obviously), possibly cuts to foreign aid (that tends to eliminate jobs, though). Why doesn't Congress vote itself a 10-15% pay cut? Now there's an idea!

I don't think the military has been cut. There is a lot of room there for cuts.

you are wrong ruth, the only "cuts" to the budget have been reductions in the rate of increase in spending. that is what passed for a budget cut these days. we need REAL spending cuts. if a program costs $1 billion a year, and the rate of spending increases by $1 million per year, reducing the rate of spending to $500,000 per year is not a 50% cut in the budget. a real budget cut would be to reduce the program cost to $900,000,000 per year.
