Well, my friend is a very patriotic American who has absolutely no idea what this country has done in the past or has any understanding of American history.

I was trying to explain to her that, we have a very hypocritical foreign policy. On one hand, we tell other countries that we are this freedom loving nation but on the other hand, we have supported some very brutal regimes, dictatorships and opposition groups.

In regards to Nicaragua, I was telling her about how the US supported and backed the Contras, a guerilla opposition group that carried out many violations of human rights including child rape, murder and torture.

The Reagan administration engaged in a campaign to alter public opinion on the Contras, they used to refer to the Contras as "freedom fighters" just like they used to refer to Usama Bin Laden as a "freedom fighter" before he turned against the USA.

People like Bin Laden are essentially "freedom fighters" when they are fighting for our interest but once they turn on us, they become "terrorists"

Both parties have ignorant people. What's your point? I have met Democrats AND Republicans who had no idea about the Iranian Coup D'etat in 1953.

It's nothing new.

Better schools.
No. Better parents who put a higher value on education. It just doesn't stop at the schools. its reinforced at home.

I have met liberals who do not know that the percentage of Americans living in poverty is about the same as when LBJ began the War on Poverty.
