When the economy of the US changed in the 80s that required both parents to work to maintain a household and standard of living. Blame it on business interests. We needed more workers so women were recruited into the workforce to handle corporate expansion. Schools became responsible for totally educating our children and babysitting them also. Most kids know their teachers better than their parents. And no.....it's not Obama's fault.
Yup. The right still likes to manufacture ways to pin it on the left, that's what their overfunded "think tanks" are for

Yet few are being brought forward with charges of child abuse.

We are turning into the nanny state with government taking care of us from cradle to grave.
A country founded upon rugged individualism must be domesticated over time if tyranny by a few members of a power elite group is to gain control. Over the course of about 100 years the people become obedient and do tricks for their treats. Patience, we are almost there.

It happened about 1979-1980 when Pres. Jimmy Carter created the Department of Education as a cabinet level agency.

Here in Chicago, the third largest city and school district in the USA, CPS runs the schools, not the Dept. of Education. CPS is also funded mainly be local tax dollars, not federal

Default What would they say if a private corp. had failed this miserably?

Mission
Despite the growth of the Federal role in education, the Department never strayed far from what would become its official mission: to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.
The Department carries out its mission in two major ways. First, the Secretary and the Department play a leadership role in the ongoing national dialogue over how to improve the results of our education system for all students. This involves such activities as raising national and community awareness of the education challenges confronting the Nation, disseminating the latest discoveries on what works in teaching and learning, and helping communities work out solutions to difficult educational issues.

2010 - $127,710,000,000

Your biggest teachers are your parents or family care givers. Without good parents you're going to have some seriously dysfunctional and ill equipped adults later in life.
I had a good laugh in a chat room one day where I heard some teachers commenting that they had to be parents to their students and had a bigger influence on them than their actual parents. LOL, if they think they actually have anything more than just a slight influence on a child, even if it is positive, then they're not only deluded and narcassistic they're also hopelessly stupid.
I had some great teachers who did a good job educating me but their influence on me beyond education was very limited.

It's true that many parents do not prepare a child for school at all. Kids should have some basic knowledge before stepping foot in a school but too many parents are having kids because it costs them nothing and they figure they are required to do nothing.

blink? What? You mean school isn't a babysitting service designed to provide everything? You mean us as parent's are supposed encourage our children to read, or provide them the ability to think for themselves!

ANTI Socialist sacrilege!
