Mike - I am talking about normal, everyday laws - from zoning laws, to health laws, to traffic laws etc.
One example - pretty common: A new adult bookstore or strip club wants to move into a commercially zoned area - want to bet the battle over moral values in the community will not be part of the approval / disapproval process?
Did you know that in Clark County Nevada (Las Vegas), New Car dealers are not open on SUNDAY -
The Sunday close however is not remotely religious. and the City and County have agreed they will be glad to remove the ban anytime the industry wants. It is actually a labor law agreed to by the participants.
The ACLU is annoying because they get the law right...and a lot of us don't like the law...We want our view...not what the law says.
There is a lot of stuff shoved down our throats that most people are against. It's high time we shove back and hard.
I agree, but we have to carefully pick our battles. To my knowledge, the ACLU has not prevented anyone from worshipping as they see fit, whether it's in their home, in their private schools, or in their places of worship. The ACLU seeks to keep a firewall between church and state. For lack of a firewall all you get is violence between varous sides seeking to control what passes for government. As in Baghdad & Iraq between Sunni and Shia.
The main people griping about the ACLU are the American Taliban (or AT, as mentioned earlier in this thread). The AT is funding the ADF. The AT rakes in millions of dollars per year in donations with scare tactics that "religion is under attack" and other such nonsense. Just like any dictator who rallies the people against "external" enemies, e.g., Saddam Hussein, the nut in Tehran, Castro, Chavez, et al, they all do it. They point fingers at some alledged boogeyman. This rallies the fools who then donate time, money, or bodies for the cause.
Beware those who send us scare stories, while holding an outstretched hand. Be it the NRA, the Sierra Club, and many others.
There is a lot of stuff going on that I don't like, such as Tom Delay giving $1B of our taxes to Exxon to do "research" when Exxon had $40B in profit last year and can do their own damned research just fine. The list of stuff that has gone on during the Bush league years is long and odious. That is going to change. Trust me.
As far as stuff being shoved down our throats, I'm gagging on red ink from the Bush tax cuts, which feeds hundreds of billions of dollars per year of our tax money to the wealthy, when in fact the wealthy never needed 'relief' in the first place, and when 40-50 million fine Americans cannot even afford health care. Millions of families are without health insurance, the lack of which drives more families bankrupt than any other cause, yet Dobson and Focus on THE FAMILY say nothing about this nearly genocidal situation? But on the issue of gay marriage (a NON issue) he sure has his mouth at full throttle and both his hands outstretched for donations.
So someone somewhere (especially Dobson, the AT, et al) is whining big crocodile tears because the ACLU doesn't want a nativity scene on the grounds of city hall. Oh dear, oh woe is us, how will we ever survive such an assault on our tender sensibilities and fragile democracy. Gee, only 95%+ of land in any city is in private hands, but they gotta put a religious display on city hall? Nah.
Fine, i choose to fund the ADF We were doing just fine until the 1960s. We haven't even won a war since. The liberals were even friends then! Gosh, the greatest generation had the worst kids ever!! And it's gonna get worst...
Segregation and McCarthyism sure were awesome! Then again... we still have segregation and McCarthyites, so maybe we haven't come that far? ... Nah, we've come pretty far. Just not far enough.

Fine Nick, I choose to fund the ACLU. We don't need to go start any more wars, do we?
As I recall, we were attacked by Al Queda, operating out of Afghanistan. By the end of 2001 we had gone in and kicked them out, killing many thousands. Al Queda started a war. We finished it; in months. A marvelous & brilliant campaign, if ever was one.
Osama got away because Rummy tried to do it on the cheap and have the Afghan 'warlords' slaughter him at Tora Bora. Dirt poor warlord 'troops' simply took bribes from Osama's folks, who then walked freely over the border into Pakistan. I went nuts, I sat there at my office in the Pentagon screaming NO NO NO. We had the 10th Mountain Division sitting in Kabul. I know those guys would cut Osama and his merry band of murderers into kibbles and bits and feed them to the dogs. Rummy let him get away.
We were NOT attacked by Iraq. We went to war on tiny snippets of trumped up bogus intel. Just like we went to war in Vietnam over the Gulf of Tonkin incident - an incident which NEVER happened. And you wanna cast your lot with the ADF, supported by nut jobs like Pat Robertson who broadcasts crap about assassinating that chump Chavez? Nick, get real. The ADF is the WORST thing ever! If Robertson's could start a war with Venezuela, it won't be his ass up on the line.
IMO, the war in Iraq was hatched by Cheney during closed door sessions with key leaders of the oil industry early in Bush-43. To this day, whatever was discussed there has not been made public. Alan Greenspan admitted it in his recent book and on TV; the war in Iraq is about oil. Not about WMD. Not about terrorism. Not about spreading democracy.
The ADF is NOT your friend. The Constitution and the Rule of Law are your best friend and deserve defending, with your life, even if it means no nativity display this year at city hall. Beware of grandstanders who make public spectacles of themselves about putting the Ten Commandments on a marker at city hall. These people have motives, and it isn't about religion. Its about money and control. They'll get none of my money and will exercise NO control over me.
s/Mike

Shucks, are you old enough to remember the 50s. The good ole days when men were men, and women were wives.
