This is all just hypothetical but lets just say if the Unites States chose to make Spanish the official language of the country and just kept English as the "de facto" language, would the United States become a Latin American country and if so would that make all American citizens instantly become Latinos? Any thoughts?

While you are obviously being facetious, what isn't so far-fetched is that the Latino population of several large states is now (2010) between 30-50%! (Calif., New Mexico, Arizona, Texas) ... and rapidly becoming a dominant economic, political and demographic force in America.
If Spanish ever became the official language of the United States
Quote:
Asians Pass Latinos as Biggest Immigrant Group Asians are now the fastest-growing immigrant group in America, and as the Boston Herald reports, these new immigrants are generally educated and culturally well-adjusted upon arrival:
I think we'd stand a better chance of becoming Asian.
The probability of that happening is slim to none. Both a Hispanic majority and Spanish becoming an official language are impossible in the foreseeable future.
The United States nationally is an Anglo nation dominated by Anglo customs like the English language and other aspects of our beginning as a collection of 13 BRITISH colonies. Sure we have "Hispanic" areas like the Southwest, Puerto Rico, and other cultures like American Indians, Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders, etc but they have learned to adapt to the political, cultural, and economic realities of the United States as a nation.
If American English became the official language of Sweden, would all Swedes become Yankees?
