If politicians refuse to work with the NAACP, the black community is said to be outraged. If reporters decline to interview the National Council of La Raza, Hispanics as a group are said to be furious. The same routine has played out with other rights groups as well. The risk of incurring charges of bigotry makes it difficult for specious claims of political representation to be challenged by outsiders. External criticism or even internal dissent on the part of minorities is quickly branded as "sending the wrong message","threatening to reverse hard won gains", or simply " opposing civil rights."
What this rhetorical conceals is that civil rights is now, to a large extent, a fund raising operation. Groups like the NAACP work in coalition with other activist groups such as NOW, the NEA, and the AFL-CIO to win political and financial benefits through horse-trading. You back me, I'll back you. There is nothing unusual about such bartering, except that it converts civil rights from a moral ideal that transcends partisian politics into another special interest cause that may or may not warrant public support.
An early NAACP declaration insists that the responsibility for the condition of blacks "rests chiefly upon the white people of the United States, and it is their duty to change them".
Romney's just fullfiling his obligation. He would be hypocritical if he didn't.

Shelton director of the Naacp washington bureau.......

"Shelton could not confirm Obama's participation this year, but he said the White House told him it is processing the invitation, and the NAACP is "hopeful" the president will attend. "

"Shelton said the NAACP would like to see the candidates discuss the rising unemployment rate, which for African Americans is nearly twice the national average."

wonder, they still are 'hopeful' with the UER what it is under Obama?

guess Obamanomics will win the day and report the UER would have been much higher if obama was not running the country. you do know he does run the country.

If romney wins support of the NAACP the left will charge he is supported by a racist organization.

It's a complete waste of his time to speak to them, everyone knows 95% of them are going to vote for Obama no matter what he does. The only value Romney gets from this is some PR he can use to try and swing some more of the 'undecided' voters.

Uh..if he wins, he'll be the president of black people too, including this black man. And he has a duty to tell me what he's gonna do regardless of my political affiliation and who i plan to vote for. I'll tell you up front that i'm not voting for Romney, but if he wins he's still accountable to me (and other blacks) no differently than he's accountable to whites or any other group.

So no...it's not a waste of time to speak to blacks. It's his duty to do so.

Bunch of hypocrites with no integrity, just like Romney
What a joke, an Obama supporter saying anyone else has no integrity. How may promises has Obama broken? All of them? How about that fictional 'biography'? Sure takes a lot of integrity to write a biography that isn't true.

Just like the Democrats. A bunch of hypocrites who will vote for Obama no matter what he does or how badly he fails.

That is how it's supposed to work, but in the real world that doesn't happen. Obama certainly hasn't been president for everyone, he's done everything he can to support the people who voted for him, especially those who paid to get him elected, and ignored or ridiculed those who didn't. Similar to what Bush did, and Clinton before him, it's been getting worse with every president doing less for the entire country and more for their party.

Nonsense. That is how it DOES work, and has been working for quite a while. Both Bush's made their case to black people. Hell, even Reagan and Nixon did. And Romney had damn well better do it too.

Obama has been the president for everyone, including you. That doesn't mean you have to like him. But it's a flat-out lie to say that he isn't the president for everyone.

If you feel ignored or ridiculed, then you're too damn sensitive. Toughen up.

Uh...the sitting President nor any political candidate is constitutionally bound to speak to any constituents affiliated with any political party. Being held accountable for American citizens doesn't obligate him to serve or dedicate any amount of time engaging in political discourse with groups that aren't on his agenda. Hell, if that were the case, than according to your theory he should also be under obligation to meet with white supremicist groups, satnic cults and nut cases like the polar bear club since he is responsible for them as well.

If I were him, I wouldn't waste more than 5 minutes for a photo op with the NAACP for the sake of saving time and resources. It's probably in his best interest to do so anyway in order to prevent him from having to go into damage control and further exacerbating this idea that Republicans are inherently racist.
