Another side effect is that criminals are removed from society, the crime rate goes down and fewer law abiding citizens are victimized.
A large percentage of property and violent crimes is directly related to the drug trade. Possession convictions take dangerous criminals off the street as numerous studies have proven.

By your logic,and since we have the largest prison population in the world, America should be a crime free utopia.

Or all the gangs that formed in the prisons spill over to the outside world which causes destruction especially to minority communities. If a person is in gang in prison that should not be allowed to leave prison.

Luckily many don't leave prisons so quickly today -- our homicide rate is now down to 1911 levels. Our streets have become quite safe, much safer than the 1970's streets.
I think we could use a few more prisons however and even longer prison terms. And it would be okay if prisoners were supplied with large quantities of every kind of drug -- that should make everyone happy. No medical treatment if they choose to overdose.
I would say 45% are in Prison or Jail for harmless crimes like using soft drugs or under the age of consent for sex or in some states alcohol use...which is ridiculous...
