The Mandate goes like this: if you can afford health insurance, yet do not want it, you don't have to get it...but will be charged a tax. If you cannot afford it, you are not taxed.

However, of all the things that are in this legislation, this is the only that people seem to talk about...gives me the impression that no one is actually bothering to read the darn thing. One of the major aspects of this Act is that will prevent Insurance companies form:

1. Dropping you after you have hit your "lifetime limit" on claims.

2. Prevent them from denying coverage due to pre-existing conditions. Which should make all ya'll rednecks happy seeing as how ya'll like to smoke and chew tobaccy. This is cool since something like....oh, I dunno, lupus, is not caused by lifestyle choices, yet those with lupus are charged out the anus if they can get coverage at all. By the way, this where the Mandate comes in.

3. Charging you fees for "administrative" this and that. They will now have to divulge what and why you are buying charged.

4. Charging co-pays or other charge for preventative care (mammograms, colonoscopies, etc.).

5. Denying claims without justification. Insurance companies are now required to go through an appeals process.

6. Dropping you when you get sick.

And a bunch more. To be honest, if it wasn't for the hype the "Mandate" has been receiving, more Americans would probably be for it.

Oh, before I forget, Congress will now have to get the same health insurance as the rest of America. The logic being that if Americans are going to be paying for their own insurance (uh, the Mandate), then American tax payer should not pay for the Cadillac health coverage that Congress currently enjoys...and that we have always been paying for with our tax-payer money. But for some reason that never raises an eyebrow from the Tea Toddlers.

But hey, if you don't like it, then you can just move to Canada like many F-book users are posting.

And it is not called Obamacare, it is called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

What's the dislike of Obamacare these days? 55-60%? That's enough to win an election.
I remember back when OCare was signed and the right was hollaring about it being a tax; the left was chastising and making fun of us for thinking that. Calling us stupid, etc. Couldn't be a tax because OBam said it wasn't.

No further comment.

a normal pln would require a $1000-2000 deductible PLUS 35%.

obama plan is better!

Be sure to thank the middle class for that. They're paying for you to get your freebies from the gov't.

If you're self-employed yes.

If you're not self-employed, no.

You're already paying for people who want free healthcare... they're called the uninsured and make up the bulk of premium costs.

This is no closer to socialism than having public schools, roads, or police. If those things scare you, move to Somalia where every man gets to look out for himself

For now it is better. It can go up if costs go up and they can tax you as much as they want and take over health care all together and tax you even more .

Okay, you keep telling yourself that. This decision has paved the way for the gov't to tax you whenever you don't do something. Don't want to buy a Chevy Volt? Well the gov't can tax you if you don't. That's what this just did.

ETA: STILL doesn't solve the cost problem. Instead of paying for them as 'uninsured'. Now we just pay for their health insurance. No savings there. Actually, it will increase costs according to, oh I don't know, everyone.
