Whiton said a young man came in to the store to buy two packs or cigarettes on May 29. When she asked him for his ID, he handed her his EBT card.

EBT cards are used for both food and cash assistance programs. There are two types of cards: one can only be used for food. The other can be spent on anything and used just like a debit card.

I found this funny and likely cuts to the core of the issue.

The next day Whiton said the customer’s foster mother came to the store to complain. Whiton received a call later that day from the company’s home office in Maine, telling her it had received a complaint about her and reprimanded her.

So he ran home and got his mommy?

Bottom line.

“I made the statement, ‘do you think myself, that lady and that gentlemen should pay for your cigarettes?’ and he responded ‘yes,’ ” Whiton said.

Amazing, simply amazing.
Doesn't the store owner have the right to fire and hire who they want??

You want big gubiment to come in and rescue this clerk who the store owner feels has poor customer service skills??

Price and participation may vary.

In this case since it's a legal transaction it's certainly grounds to fire her.

I would call it sticking to your principals, good for her. According to the article she actually gave notice but they fired her because she wasn't going to process those transactions for the week she'd be there. Even gave them a weeks notice she was quitting.

In any event these types of transactions need to be stopped, certainly you don't agree with these funds being used for cigarettes, booze and gambling?

If you know this (above), then why did you say this (below) previously?

You've already figured out that EBT cards have both food stamps and cash on the same card.
You cannot buy toilet paper with the FOOD STAMP part of that card. However, you CAN buy toilet paper, booze, cigs, paper products, feminine products... heck whatever cash can buy... with the CASH portion of the card.
NO ONE is buying cigarettes, booze or gambling with their food stamps - NO ONE. It just doesn't work that way.

And while I am on the subject...
When someone "loses" their EBT card and reports it missing there is a simple way to tell if that card is being used: everything is computerized. The lost card is immediately cancelled and any monies left on it (so says the computer!) is what the client gets on the newly issued card.
Someone cannot sell their food stamp card (and let someone use all their benefits) and then report it missing in the hopes of getting all those food stamps back. It just doesn't happen that way.
In order for someone to use someone else's EBT card they would have to get the PIN from the owner of the card. Sure, someone could steal someone's card, but the chance that the PIN is with the card is probably going to be very slim.

You quoted me despite the fact that I made absolutely no comment on whether or not an employee could fire someone. Never mind that the point is also completely irrelevent here.

You pretty much took the thought out of my head. Or to quote Kilpatrick in Airplane: "They bought their tickets.....let them die!"

Both cigarettes and booze are agricultural products. Supporting agriculture by increasing demand is why the Food Stamp program exists. Gambling is another matter. Let the poor use the local bookies and loan sharks like always while the rich use your money on Wall Street.

All too many people have no respect for themselfes or others, have absolutely zero ambition and are very very happy to have you pay for them. Human scum one step removed from criminals. Hell, in many cases worse; even criminals work for their "income".

Just becase the government says you can use EBT cards for booze, junk food or cigs, doesn't mean businesses have to accept them. It would be great to see some major convenience store chains say that they won't take them for anything but non-junk foor or househould necessities. I'm betting they would increase their sales to hard working people everywhere.

If you look at her picture she is probably around 60 years old working as a clerk.

Given her age, current career and whatnot it seems to me that she has probably worked her whole life for little money and it bothers her to see people freeloading off of her.

And no, she isn't dumb. The gal likely makes minimum wage and can find a new job pretty easily. Why do you have to be hating on poor old ladies that have some principles whether you approve of her position or not?

You've developed quite a habit for absolutely mistating what someone says and then lecturing them over it.
