“Unless a man has talents to make something of himself, freedom is an irksome burden. Of what avail is freedom to choose if the self be ineffectual? We join a mass movement to escape individual responsibility, or, in the words of the ardent young Nazi, ‘to be free from freedom.’”

A coworker from my previous job sent me an e-mail regarding a young lady in her 20's. She was making a proposition regarding the regulation of the "sissy-nanny welfare state". She claimed that as more people fall on hard times, more will inevitably seek it out. The solution? If you're on welfare, you can't vote. If you are getting $$$ for food from the government, you cannot buy prepared or ready made food. You can only buy the ingredients so you can WORK to create your meals. If you are a recent immigrant, you CANNOT apply for government subsidies. The government will pay for your trip back home, but it will not pay to support your existence. We have enough American leeches today that we can't afford. Maybe I'll dig it up later. I was quite impressed.

Those ideas make perfect sense.

Take away their cable tv, xbox live access and cell phones to boot that taxpayers end up paying for and they will eventually seek work out of boredom.

Uuuuh yeah but, what about all your aboriginals? They're already home, not working at anything meaningful, not paying taxes and they are CITIZENS. Oooopsy!

One could arguably state with supporting facts that your country has been the very epitome of a "nanny state" for decades. You are constantly referring to other countries to describe these terrible "socialistic" tendancies run amock.

With just one minutes worth of unprejudicial "googling" look within folks and compare some of your "freebies" and largesse to those of those other "nanny states" and I think the results might surprise you, as all of those McCarthy era fears and suspicions have certainly come to be within your very own utopia of ignorance.
