Carter did an ok job, didn't eff anything up too badly anyway.
I'm very happy that Carter deregulated the American beer industry by opening access of the home-brew market back up to the craft brewers, making it again legal to sell malt, hops, and yeast to American home brewers for the first time since the beginning of Prohibition in the United States.
No. If the rescue mission wouldn't have been bungled, he would have been a hero. I don't believe that we have had a president with his moral integrity for a hundred years. If he had a fault as a leader, it was that he was too good and kind of a man. If we see that as a fault, there is something wrong with us as a nation.
I think I agree. I have, frankly, never heard or read anything from Carter that did not impress me as coming from someone who represents our highest ideals. He is a Christian humanitarian to the core and exceedingly intelligent. There is no question that Reagan was a stronger politician, much stronger, so he trounced him, but I hold Carter in higher regard than any living president, and most of the dead ones. He did not have a commanding presence but a first rate heart and mind.
Was Gerald Ford really that bad I think is a more debatable question. He got maligned pretty bad but when you look at Obama and Bush ( Feeble Dum and Feeble Dee), he wasn't that dumb or even that clumsy. Even Clinton fell down some stairs and broke his leg, right? At that Golfer's house. Carter was that bad and he lost ground once he left office. Maybe Ford should have stayed in another term, he couldn't have done any worse than the Georgia bumpkin who followed him.
Although to be fair we all thought nobody could be worse after Duhbya and we were way off the mark on that one.
Carter had his issues but the larger problem was the era. A lot of the economic problems traced back to Nixon and LBJ. Nixon was to the left of Obama on economics--he instituted wage and price controls, which Obama would not dream of doing. Nixon Imposes Wage and Price Controls
Ford's idea monetary policy was to print up buttons that said 'Whip Inflation Now' (WIN).
Miltary-wise, the post Viet-Nam era cast a shadow over everything. It was the first war ever that America lost. Nobody wanted to go to Vietnam. I was a kid in those times. My older cousin, whose lifelong dream was to be an airforce pilot, breathed a sigh of relief when he was spared from going into the military by the draft lottery.
GI Joe was discontinued by Hasbro toys in the late 70's due to lack of demand. In 1982 Joe came storming back. Late 1970's were a strange era; baby boomers were not quite children, not quite adults.
Only if you lived through 18% interest rates and Americans being held hostage while our enemies laughed at our leader can you realize how bad a president he was. And that is from someone who actually voted for him and defended him early on.

You know the old joke about sex in the canoe and American beer (@#$$in close to water!)..it was true! Now, we have the best ales in the world, and a variety to die for. I love that guy!!!!

True story, hell I'll raise my glass to Jimmy Carter right now.
