Not even close to the same thing. In Slab city they aren't harassed, it's a friendly community that looks out for eachother, no one is telling them what to do or when and where to do it. They can drink in the open, do drugs, or go nude if they choose. That's freedom. How anybody could have a problem with what they are doing, is beyond me.
Yes, they can do whatever they want. But you shouldn't try to oversell it.
It is what it is.
Predominately, a bunch of older, poor, society dropouts and druggies, still living in large part on government social programs, and giving nothing back in return. It's not ideal.
If the one's that are over 65 are living only on their SS checks, that's one thing, but if most really are taking food stamps and welfare, or medicaid, then that's a little different.
If they really want to call themselves free, they should refuse any and all government assistance. Until or unless they are truly self sufficient, they really can't honestly call themselves 'free'

Let's not pretend it's some utopia. Crime does exist there, including violent crimes. Also, the Sheriffs department does patrol the area.
He could no longer afford to stay at an RV park and heard about Slab City. The family lives on food stamps and money from odd jobs.
This is a silly point. Almost everyone is dependent on the govt whether they like it or not, because some would prefer not to be doesn't make them any less valid. I mean people have to live.

How in the world do you know they are giving nothing back in return?

We agree.
OP thinks Slab City is a Libertarian Nirvana where his ideology has made people "free"....LOL
He wants Americans to walk away from middle class benefits so than can live free in his dog-eat-dog, survival of the fittest, rat race. Where the rich own the rest of us.
I don't understand why they left the water out in the open. Can you imagine how much is lost to evaporation before it reaches LA? I've also read that animals (cattle) get caught in that thing.

No thank you.
Actually, that wasn't what I read out of the OPs post. (lol)

I never said that, I did say I think it's cool that they have found this peace of solace, where they can be left alone. To me, they are paying a dear price for this escape. 120 degrees? not for me, but more power to em.

Interesting. Wish the one guy had stopped talking in the background. Also the music was way too much loud distorted bass...ugh.

While I think having space is really important, I think having a community is also very important. People can be amazing resources for one another.
