All it takes is someone being persistant with their doctor and the doc gives the OK.

We need people to monitor these cases, and re-evaluate their need for SSDI.
I think it's more prevalent than we know. Where I used to work, in Miami, I knew no less than 4 people who received SSDI and three of them held jobs, paid under the table so that they could continue to receive SSDI. The other one spent all her SSDI money on pills and alcohol. No, not the pills she was "supposed to take", pills to get high. The drugs were rampant in my old neighborhood. All it took was one person who knew a doctor who would give them what they wanted. Employers should be held accountable, as well, if they partake in the abuse.

The system is terribly broken. The largest problem is that the ALJ's (Administrative Law Judges) have way too much discretion.

Here is a good article from WSJ regarding one judge who approves 99% of the people who apply.

How many of the 8 million were collecting unemployment for 99 weeks and when it ran out decided to try the 'disabled' scam. In any case these 8 million non workers are no longer counted as being 'unemployed'. All kinds of gimmicks being used to get the number under 8% before November.

Today it is 1 in 16 getting SSDI

8,733,461: Workers on Federal 'Disability' Exceed Population of New York City | CNSNews.com
A record of 8,733,461 workers took federal disability insurance payments in June 2012, according to the Social Security Administration. That was up from 8,707,185 in May.
..
In fiscal 2009, the Disability Insurance Trust Fund deficit was $8.5 billion. In fiscal 2010, it was $20.8 billion. And in fiscal 2011, it was $25.3 billion.
I wonder how many are on disability because they're obese and they have limited mobility to work.

Brings to mind the adult baby profiled on NatGeo who is on disability.

SSDI is the new welfare and I continue to be confused about why children who are too young to work qualify for this program.
I know a number of people who are collecting and know for a fact that they could work if they had to. They prefer to abuse alcohol and drugs, so why work when you can get paid for doing what you love: lounging around and getting wasted on a daily basis!
I know of one disability collector who qualifies for a paid home health aid who happens to be his live in lady friend. Her duties include going to the pharmacy to pick up his taxpayer funded narcotics and to the liquor store for his free booze.
When he is sober enough he enjoys golf, fishing and trips to the casino.

I find it difficult to believe that we have that many more disabled people today than we did 20 years ago. Someone is gaming the system.

You can be on SSDI and make a limited amount of money without being paid under the table.

As to the high numbers - discouraging, but at least some of the increase can be attributed to the aging population. The baby boomers are getting old, and many diseases which cause disability appear or get bad enough to cause disability later in your working life.

I only know one person on SSDI and that is my younger sister, who has an aggressive case of rheumatoid arthritis. She can no longer do the nursing that she loves, or even desk work in the medical field (because of her fingers). If I thought she was trying to scam the system, I'd report her. You should report potential fraud, or else you are a part of the problem.

Of course people are gaming the system. It was practically a way of life where I grew up. Work until 40 or so, then fake an injury or fake a mental illness. Every ad on the front of the phone book is for a disability lawyer, and many of those will tell their clients exactly how to dress and behave in order to win. The lawyers should be hauled off to jail along with their scum clients.

These programs need to be there for people who actually are disabled, but that can't be sustained if people are scamming the system.

Yes, there are some people who are committing fraud. However, disability is very hard to get. I personally know someone with Stage 4 cancer whose application was denied and a man whose leg was amputated who had to hire an attorney to get disability benefits. I'm sure someone who wants to prove his point can find people cheating the government, but the percentage of people on SSDI who aren't very ill is very small.

RE: Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and other syndromes

I am not on SSDI, and I don't get a dime from the government, but please don't judge someone's pain as "made-up" unless you've suffered from a difficult condition that's hard to diagnose. Chronic, intractable pain is hell to live with, and I hope you never know what it's like to go through life wondering if you'll ever have a pain-free day.

But a 22% increase since the bottom fell out of the economy ? That's just a little too coincidental to think that many are becoming disabled.
