I got ding'd a rep earlier for making the suggestion that some fat people had the ability to lose weight ("medical conditions" and "it's not their fault" were pretty common responses).

Go ahead and chime in, and (if you dare) finish your post with your height, weight, build, and exercise habits.

Is depression considered extreme in your view? I am sure it has been noted as one of the causes.

Of course they have the ability to lose weight. It's un-healthy life choices with the culpability of eating large amounts of food with the lack of exercising. And in today's "Not my fault." society, there are excuses to everything. But of course you have exceptions to the rule.

It really depends, but sure, it can be an "uncontrollable" cause. People with clinical depression and on anti-depressants (Paxil for instance) can gain quite a bit of weight. I am sure there are some other similar examples.

For non-clinical depression, it is kind of a "chicken and egg" thing. Are people gaining weight because they are depressed and seeking food, or are they depressed because they are overweight? I really don't know.

Additionally, even in many extreme cases people still have the ability to lose weight, it just may be a little more difficult for them than the average person.

"More difficult" is still within your control in my opinion.

response, one every 3 americans is obese. one in 4 kids is obese.
nobody was ever helped by blaming. nor were they helped by denial.
i think as a people we need to take better care of ourselves. this is a health issue, just like smoking. it would seem that those around us are not being the watch dogs for our health we might like so we as individuals need to do more. no?
weight control is 80% diet and 20% exercise.
french people 1 in 10 is obese.

I know when I was a fat boy it was because

1) I love to eat.

2) I didn't want to exercise and exercised the option not to. Being sedentary and eating was much more pleasurable

I think that's the case in most instances although I was happier blaming it on anything else.

Let's say I choose to be obese... I like it. Or my SO likes it. How about that? Do you wanna make it a crime, too?

I do believe one must take personal responsibility for their own health. There are valid medical situations that do cause weight gain, pituitary disease, hormone imbalances, etc. It's an individual choice to have a healthy, active lifestyle. To each their own, no one should judge.

Make no mistake about that.
Now the ones that are HUGE that have to take a cart to drive around the store.. no way. I always tell my husband to stop me if I even look like I might be headed down that road.
There's a diffrence between passing judgement and being realistic. I have a friend that was larger, wouldn't say fat per se, but he lost his weight with a correct diet (less calories). I have other friends that are fat and have relatives that are fat.

But the reality is that people are lazy, and food choices don't help. I'm not skinny, but I'm making sure I don't gain enough weight that impacts my health or any function such as inability to walk, inability to sit in airplanes without buying a 2nd seat, etc.

Being a realist dosent mean you judge people.
