In the political sense... "attaching of legislation" is a common practice. However this methodology of inclusion should be discontinued, or allow the President, a "line item veto". I hope the president does not sign the bill.
To put this in perspective... if you needed money to pay for your mortgage, you'd have to permit your neighbors kids to do as they please and make correcting them wrong, and punishable if you did! Two separate and distinct issues that prevents any dialogue. Take it or leave it mentality.
The law historically provided "special" protection for groups or people who did not have full access to society. Years ago it was women... today children are the only group I see as "entitled" to special legislation to protect them above and beyond common law.
To suggest this should be a Christian value vote, is an attempt to divide Christians rather than promote understanding. All of scripture is to teach, reproof and edify... not divide or be subject to stereotype labels like "convenient Christians". How does that help? and where does the scripture say we should label people? Where is the wisdom in that statement?
Matt 16:23 But after turning and looking at his disciples, he (Jesus)rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but on man’s.”
Jesus also tell us....Our battle is not against flesh... it is against institutions... agendas by any group that has open sin, and promotes sinful behavior. ANY GROUP. When anyone promotes an agenda... other than God's... Jesus tells us it's satans work, and that work is to divide and destroy.
I am against any "special protective" legislation other than law that protects children and animals, they can't vote. If you can register to vote... there is your protection.
