"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than 1 million homes and businesses in a swath from Indiana to Virginia remained without power on Wednesday, five days after deadly storms tore through the region.

The outage meant no July 4 Independence Day holiday for thousands of utility workers who scrambled to restore lingering power outages.

Much of the damage to the power grid was blamed on last weekend's rare "derecho," a big, powerful and long-lasting wind storm that blew from the Midwest to the Atlantic Ocean.

Violent weekend storms and days of record heat have killed at least 23 people in the United States since Friday. Some died when trees fell on their homes and cars, and heat stroke killed others.

Energy provider Dominion Virginia Power said emergency crews were working around the clock to deal with 60,000 outages for its customers throughout Virginia as of noon Wednesday.

Service for virtually all customers in Northern Virginia and the Richmond metropolitan area who lost electric service because of the storms should be restored by Friday night, said Daisy Pridgen, a Dominion spokeswoman. In a few instances, work may continue into Saturday where there was extreme damage, she said."

More than 1 million in U.S. still without power 5 days after storm- swissinfo
I got power back on the 5th day here in Columbus.

What is the president supposed to do? I mean, it's not like EVERYTHING was out. If everybody in OH, WV, and VA lost power, then yes, I would expect the feds to step up. Even here in Columbus, about 50% of customers were without power at the maximum. There were still stores open, friends with electricity, cooling centers, etc - you just had to get to them.

So I don't really see the comparison with New Orleans where a good portion of the city was underwater and people LITERALLY could not get out. We went to Pittsburgh on Sunday to the zoo.

Poor people are suffering, dont you care about them?
You all really do suck at logic and reading comprehension don't you.

I never said anything about the storm and I stand by those comments.

My point is I think it is stupid to call someone a fool for doing something and then proceed to do it yourself.

As to the storm I really don't know enough about it and the federal response to say either way. With the Katrina comments I had years of hindsight, this is 5 days old and ongoing and BTW a good North Carolina ice storm will take out your power for 2 weeks where I live which is hardly rural.

While you are trying to demonize FEMA which if it was to have the workers and inventory to bring electric utilities back on line after a catastrophy would have to be supported by tens if not hundreds of billion dollars in taxes and a level of control that you might see in a socialist nation. You would be better to focus your attention to those who run the holding companies and the Bain's , Carlyle's and Koch Groups who pull those string's. The people who have sliced and diced the utlities, ruthlessly cut costs including electricians and linemen and will NOT TOLERATE unnecessary spending for upgrades, having expensiver inventories for things like replacement large transformers or having skilled workers on the workforce beyond those needed for operations under normal conditions. This is America buddy and RETURN ON INVESTMENT rules so sit in a sweltering house and just think whatit was like back when America was born. General Washington didn't have electricity or airconditioning. Kinda gives you that warm sweatty feeling doesn't

Perr their own website it was 6,800 and not 60,000.

You can look up each and every state and find all the numbers in this article are highly inflated.

Why do we need fema or the president This is not a disaster of epic proportion. But the media has been all over it. Not sure what you're watching. But we did lost power and the power companies are working their ass off to get everyone back up.
What exactly does this have to do with Obama though???

You didnt answer the question.

Again

Please share with us all the GOP plans to keep the lands a festering swampland...

Personally, I think its stupid to run around claiming the GOP would want land to stay a festering swampland.. but that didnt stop you from being dumb, did it?

That is my point. Was Bush supposed to hand pan the water out of nu oleens?? You don't see the hypocrisy in the outcry about a statewide natural disaster? I guess not.

Again you must be really bad at reading comp since I believed I linked this article on that very thread. Many in the GOP straight up did not want to rebuild New Orleans and would rather just leave vast swaths of the city devastated swampland.

The case against rebuilding the sunken city of New Orleans. - Slate Magazine

From the article...

"Only one politician, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, dared question the wisdom of rebuilding New Orleans as it was, where it was. On Wednesday, Aug. 31, while meeting with the editorial board of the Daily Heraldof Arlington Heights, Ill., he cited the geographical insanity of rebuilding New Orleans. "That doesn't make sense to me. … And it's a question that certainly we should ask."
"It looks like a lot of that place could be bulldozed," Hastert added."

Personally if you are going to criticize something you should probably not take snipits out of context and as I said I 100% stand by what I said.
