Ash from coal-based power plants can be used. many years ago, I used to work for a cement plant which used to buy coal ash from local power plant and use it as one of the ingredients in cement manufacturing.

and with modern emissions controls, coal fired plants are relatively clean to operate, those that arent are shut down, or have been converted to other energy sources.

the biggest problem with coal however is the ash that is left over after burning.

There are many power plants around the world based on natural gas. I have been to one which generates 1000 MW.

Those must be more of those green jobs Obama pinned his economic recovery on and people wonder why new jobs numbers can't keep up with the incoming labor pool.

I happen to know that this was planned during the Bush era. Natural gas is cheap, plentiful and much cleaner (even though it does put CO2 into the air). You don't convert a coal burning power plant to natural gas in one presidential term
