It's something that's needed here in Manhattan. I've literally seen 9'' by 6'' (30 square feet) "apartments" in Chelsea that rent for $1000 month. The matter of the fact is that most people in Manhattan cram in - I know tons of people who rent rooms together (a small room in a Manhattan apartment rents for over a 1000). 300 sq ft is more than enough room for many people here. In Manhattan, the city is your living room. Plenty of people here are only at home when they sleep and would love to have a more affordable, small space.
He stated that single people don't need any more space than 300 SF. [He gets to live in Gracie Mansion]
That the rent that singles are paying now is too high, averaging $2000 for a studio and $2700 for a one bedroom. That they are paying more than 50% of their salary for rent. That 300 SF would be cheaper.
I recall seeing a news story awhile ago where some city has people living in cargo containers stacked like apartment buildings. [end units get windows cut out]
Its a great idea, though not original. They already have such singles apartments in highly dense and expensive cities like Hong Kong and Singapore. In mainland China, they have something called "pod apartments" which are basically uber cheap dorm style residences with your own "pod" where you basically sleep and have common shower and toilet facilities. In such massive cities where there is so much to do and people hardly hang out at home, it makes perfect economical sense.
The market. LOL, you arguing for allowing the market to set prices. Priceless.
.
I'm not arguing anything, just stating a fact. Rental prices are determined by the market. NYC has high demand, and because of this landlords can command huge prices. It's not unusual to find a 1,000 square condo for a half a million.
Mayor Bloomberg launches contest to stir development of tiny 300-square-foot apartments for singles
Larger than a jail cell, but smaller than mobile home, ministudios will reflect city's changing demographics. They'll be big enough for bathroom, kitchen, sleeping and dining areas
Look, I think Bloomberg is a kook, but this isn't a bad idea. As a young guy, I really wanted to live in NYC, but there wasn't anything I could afford, that I would live in. I would have killed for something like this.
Of course Bloomberg will still live in his palatial abodes. This is always the way with those who want to control how others live.
Indeed. And he's one of the few people who would fit into a 300 sq ft apt.
