Well it's not the religion, it's the people. Unfortunately, this Penn State shows that most people's outrage against the crime and the criminal, are only selectively applied. The Church scandal was many, many, many times more widespread and pervasive than this. Just as ugly, only larger. But the very same principles were violated, and the cover-ups as well.
It's selective character, it only appears when someone or some thing they don't like is attacked, they they pile on. I don't think any responsible human being can have a different position on the two scandals.
We had a lot of really really nasty threads about the church pedo issues around here when they broke.
Your claim that PSU is somehow being unfairly picked on is nothing but a smoke screen.
I've actually been a whole lot nicer to PSU than I was to the Catholic leadership.
It's the constant PSU apologists that are beginning to wear on my nerves though.
I don't care if it's the Catholic Church, PSU or anyone else. Covering up and enabling the rape and abuse of children should be punishable by life imprisonment or death. That actual act itself should be death.
It's about time. Even after Louie Freeh's report came out saying that Paterno knew about the depth and detail of what was transpiring since 98, some of Paternos supporters still support him and will be traumatized by this. Sad...

Sounds like they still took it down for the wrong reasons:
Quote:
Penn State President Rod Erickson said he decided to have the statue removed and put into storage because it "has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing."
Quote:
He said Paterno's name will remain on the campus library because it "symbolizes the substantial and lasting contributions to the academic life and educational excellence that the Paterno family has made to Penn State University."
Seems like statue or no statue, a lot of people still worship the guy.
Quote:
But Paterno still has plenty of fans, and Penn State's decision to remove the monument won't sit well with them. One student even vowed to "chain myself to that statue" if there was an attempt to remove it.
Since this story transcends outside of sports, I started this thread.
The Joe Paterno statue has been removed. Penalties against the university to be announced tomorrow. From what I heard the penalties will be the most severe ever in college sports history.
But will they ever expose the pedophile ring that was operating at Penn State University...
