What is this welfare state you speak of? Would describing it include cradle-to-grave multi-generational welfare with everything from free healthcare to cel-phone plans for welfare recipients? Would it include increased welfare amounts for birthing additional kiddies WHILE receiving welfare? Would it include universal education systems at state level? How about things like Medicare and Medicaid? Tax deductions for mortgage payments? Mortgages for folks who can't afford them? Food stamps? Free education for illegal immigrants? Free, emergency room oriented healthcare for illegal immigrants?

I'm getting tired here, help me out as I'm really trying hard to distinguish between your version of welfare state and what you have going for you down there in LaLa land.

People in glass houses and all that.....!

That is not really true...Handgun owners are allowed to carry in certain circumstances, but why would a criminal care if they are legal or not?

Here's another report about that little event; recognize the screenplay?

The guy running that housing complex seems awfully familiar with the script.

We need to tax the poor so they can quit being free riders (Obama's words). It would help them regain some self-respect, quit have kids they can't afford and get off drugs. We have to tax the poor in order to save the poor.

Hey....We never had gun crime 20 years ago...It was Americans who started to run pistols across the boarder at 1200 bucks ammo not included.. Thank American hip hop culture...that spread like a disease to our small black population...Thank your boarders to the south and Miami for the cocaine you folks send up....You guys tainted our turf...

As for the "welfare state" - I look out my window and the street cars are packed with workers on their way down town - the subways are packed...the roads are packed with workers going into and out of town...welfare in Canada is a system for storing people we don't need in the system- those who are useless to the mainstream economy. If it was a welfare state...we would be poor- even our poor have a clean bed and AC..You poor sit on porches like lazy hyenas waiting for a victim.

Not meaning to bash America ...but don't hope the worst for Canada out of envy- we will still stay on top the the poo heap.

In 1992? Toronto had 71 murders that year for a population of 2.75 million. Toronto has 28 murders so far this year for a population of 2.6 million.

Shootings are unfortunate, but the city's murder rate is extraordinarily low by North American standards. We should keep that in mind, too.

I have relatives and friends there. Liberals really won't like what they've been doing lately.
Do your relatives live in an alternate Canada? Because none of what you're asserting is remotely true, except for firing government employees from bloated sectors.

The Liberal government left Canada in an excellent position in 2006, and the Conservatives have squandered it. Now they're trying now to take credit for cutting the budget deficit - hey, the Liberals left the government in surplus and cut the total debt by 20% over 10 years! Conservatives came in, racked it up, and now are trying to take "credit" for putting the fiscal house in order. Bull ****.

As for crime rates, typically, murder rates in Canadian cities are between 1.0 and 2.0 per 100,000 people. According to City Data, New York City, which is now considered fairly safe, clocks in a 6. Most large American cities are above that, some by significant amounts.

And yes, now to trot out the "But Canada's not as diverse as the US" BS.

Toronto is the most diverse city in the world.
