Open carry is legal here but there is the occasional soccer mom who'll freak out and call 911, then you may or may not have to be bothered by an officer.

Best to do concealed unless you're in a more rural area. Either that or join open carry clubs where you expose the general public to it. There's one here that meets at a Panera Bread shop and chats/works/studies together while OCing. The sheeple just need a little Pavlov conditioning to desensitize.

As a gun owner (and somewhat of a gun nut), I do agree with some regulation, such as restricting the legal sale of firearms to felons. I also don't personally see the need for civilians to own assault rifles, but that's just me. I don't honestly think that a gun owner in the theatre would've made a whole lot of difference, but we don't know exactly what would happen in that situation. There was a lot of craziness and confusion going on.

But I'm still waiting for an answer. If gun control is the answer, and gun control was ALREADY in effect, why did James Holmes disobey??? Did he not know that it is illegal to shoot up a theater???

Thank God for Virginia. I carry mine, loaded, everywhere except inside the bank and inside the courthouse. I've been stopped twice, and each time, the deputies have been more than polite and professional. Don't act like an ass, and you won't be treated like one.

Go read the link, dear friend.

He broke the laws that were in effect. Gun control laws. So yes you are correct, there was no control. See how silly it is to try and legislate morality?????

Yes it was. If he was a felon, he wouldn't be able to get them. Gun control implies controlling guns to only those who can legally possess them. How are you to know that he could not? Because a few people thought he was weird? Who makes the subjective assessment? A corrupt bureaucrat who could be bribed either way?

This is true. I've been stopped twice with a loaded weapon on my person while operating a motor vehicle. Once when I was riding my motorcycle and was all leathered out. The speed limit had changed from 35 to 55 leaving town and i jumped the gun so to speak. The cop stopped me and I immediately handed him my DL and my CCW permit. He got really defensive and asked "where is it?" I told him it was inside my leather vest and he reached in and just removed it from my person. He actually could have shot me with my own gun in removing it. He then handcuffed me and made me sit on the side of the road. After about 30 minutes in his patrol car he came back with my gun in one hand and the bullets in the other and said, "here, just don't load the thing until I'm out of here" and then just pulled away. I scared the s#!t out of him so bad he forgot about me doing 55 in a 35 MPH zone.
The other stop, the guy just said, put the gun on the dash until we finish.
But that's stories for another thread. don't want to hijack

Here's the thing...no one knows how they'll respond in each situation. You may freeze in one situation but remain clear on a another. If you have multiple law abiding armed citzens chances are someone will come through...all I want is a chance versus no chance at all.

If that theater hadn't been a gun free zone and no one responded, so be it.
However since both the theater and the city chose to disarm the citizens I believe they must be then responsible for their safety...in this case both were grossly negligent.

If you want to take my ability/responsibilty away you must be willing to assume it....as well as the liability for failing to do so.

I don't have an answer-- wish I did; but this is the same culture which gave us Columbine a dozen years ago. Whatever the hand-wringers and would-be nannies propose, what they've done so far isn't working.
Add the Virginia Tech Massacre (2007). I was living in an apartment complex at the time. The REIT decided to add keyless security to entrance doors to this very large complex. I spoke to the company workers and told them how glad I was. He said their business was good because of Virginia Tech.

After the work was done, I watched adults teach the kids how to break down the security of the doors. It wasn't just happening where I lived. Folks who had to work came home to all this. Then they raise the rents to cover the damage. Its we the people. There is a kind of answer. Universal Military TRAINING for two years. Similar to USA version Garland City Citizens Police Academy, TX after High School and before College. Emphasis on USA military history. With the endorsement of the National Rifle Association and lots of Veteran Organizations. Maybe one state might try it as part of public education budget so SCOTUS can weigh in.
