People who earn Ph.D. in neuroscience don't necessarily go into academia, which is when one becomes an academic. Neuroscientists are also hired by pharmaceutical companies and biotech firms, for example.
And schools like law schools and medical schools are considered professional schools.
The major is an academic one, just as engineering and computer science. When you work towards and get a Ph.D. in one of these majors, you are considered by your peers to be an academic, whether or not you pursue a faculty/post-doc position. That is the informal title that is conveyed by the degree. Only J.D and M.D majors can even remotely be considered non-academic "professional" degrees.
But, why try to split hairs, especially since I'm an academic and you're not?
Anyone make a qualified objective assessment? Sounds like heresy at the time. Very dangerous road to travel on when a corruptible psychiatrist or politician can make a subjective assessment on the rights of an individual.
Did you read that link? Does he sound stable to you?
More people at the theatre means more potential CCW holders and a more dangerous environment for the assailant, except that Aurora is gun free, so no worries about anyone being armed.
If they are trained to deal with shooters in panicked crowded rooms with limited visibility. Otherwise creating a crossfire makes it more dangerous for everyone.

My Ph.D. is in computer science, but I am published in journals and conferences. My profession is "professional", but I am an academic.
I get what you're saying. I guess the perception (right or wrong) is that shootings in gang territories are meant to intimidate and keep control in that area, or for retaliation--they're random, but they do have a purpose that's crime related. When the gang territory variable is taken out, all you have left for a logical reason (if there can be a logical reason) is mental illness. I do understand why the automatic assumption that the guy is mentally ill because he's white upsets you, and I hope I didn't offend you. That wasn't my intent. I do get what you're saying--that violence in inner city neighborhoods can just as easily be because the shooter is sick, but he gets called a thug instead.
No offense taken at all. Not sure if this guy really is mentally ill. There are just evil people in this world who do things just because they're....evil. Sad, but true.
Think of it- The shooter was studying to be a doctor- People used to become doctors because they wanted to help and heal the afflicted- Now they become doctors for the MONEY...I can surely say that the shooter has proven that his stint in medical school was not about healing- When money is more important that life- we have a problem...I keep ranting the matra- Hollywood is to blame- I stick to that premise as far as what bad culture is and how it impacts society...If a Hollywood producer of film sits down and asks themselves this question- Will my next project harm America or will it help America..and if it harms but makes me a lot of money - does that matter? These leftists in Hollywood- love MONEY more than they love you...They don't care that after 20 years of bombarding the public with violence...if it generates a killer or two.
Look at Charlie Manson- Helter Skelter....The Beatles indirectly created this guy....but after all John Lennon said he was better than Jesus- as he sent money to arm the IRA...

To do stuff like this, people dont have to be crazy, as in hearing voices and such. They only have to be socio- or psychopathic, meaning they are only concerned for themselves and acting out their feelingss, and they have no conscience or empathy whatever for their victims.

Very well. We don't know how bad the visibility was or the military/LEO status of the attendees, so we can only speculate. Based on the law of probabilities, seems as if there would be at least one or two well trained individuals in such a large crowd.
Aren't those emergency exit doors usually locked--you can go out but not come in? That's what I don't get--how did he manage to get in the back door from the street into the theater?
Not sure, but I'm sure we will find out more as the story progresses.
