As a country which has seen strong advocacy for universal suffrage, women's rights and liberation, and a society which sees itself as progressive, it seems odd there has been no female president.
Many western democracies including Canada (Kim Campbell), the United Kingdom (Thatcher), Australia (Gillard) and New Zealand (Shipley and Clark), and a smattering of Scandinavian and European countries (Angela Merkel of Germany), have had one or two female leaders. Several Asian countries (Corazon Aquino of the Phillipines) have had female leaders, some have had several, or the same female leader more than once. This would include Indira Ghandi of India and Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan.
South American countries such as Argentina (Christina Fernandes de Kirchner and Evita Peron), and various African countries have all had female leaders.
Perhaps Pakistan is the most surprising as our image of Islamic states is that women typically have limited access to political rights.
Perhaps Hillary Clinton will be the first?
American exceptionalism. And perhaps, the fact that America is/was a patriarch. Americans don't care what the rest of the world does or thinks. We're not interested in being like you, we are the superpower, you are not. We have our own political system that works (or worked) for us well enough. Now stop obsessing over us.
There haven't been a lot of prominent female politicians who took the next step and I believe Germany, like the UK and Canada is a parliamentary system, where I think it is easier to become a PM than a directly elected President.
Gandhi, Bhutto, Peron (Isabella, not Eva) and Aquino all came from political families and followed a family member who had already been PM/President.

If the United States doesn't care what the rest of the world does, why are we always at war and why are we dropping a quarter of a trillion dollars on defense every year?
Why are we constantly meddling in the affairs of other countries?
In any case, we're very much a patriarchal society. That's changing. We'll have a woman president soon enough.

Oh..... and I don't think there is a snowballs chance in Hades of another female being elected in Pakistan since it is sliding backwards.
If Hillary does win it will be like Aquino, Peron, Gandhi & Bhutto, she is following a male family member who paved the way.
Because up until this time, we have not been willing to vote one in simply because of who she is married to, or because she has a vagina. And aside from that, we have not had a woman run for president yet who was anywhere close to being the best candidate for the job.
I expect at some point we will, and as long as she is the best candidate for the job, I will vote for her. But make no mistake, Hillary Clinton is just another affirmative action candidate, and not one other thing seriously recommends her for this high office.
I do not believe that Hillary is going to win anyway, but we will see.

Considering women were not even allowed to vote in this country until 1920, the previous history didn't
just disappear. Woman were 2nd, 3rd class citizens in this country for a very long time.

As for Hilary, the only reason anyone knows who she is, is because she married Bill. She's been riding his coattails for decades. She got a job at the rose law firm, a month after Bill was sworn in as AK attorney general, and was made partner a month after Bill was elected governor, and she ran as a carpetbagger for US Senate for NY using all of Bill's campaign staff and his political connections.
Corazon Aquino was a housewife, and was only elected because of who her recently deceased husband was. She was an unmitigated disaster as president. We should not elect women just for who their husband was.
