His choice to join.
He was a mercenary.

Did they promise him citizenship?
The answer seems to be no.

What's going on with you? Mercenary!

A fist fight between soldier! Unheard of!

Fiji, like so many former colonies and a Commonwealth nation who have supplied the British Army with soldiers for decades!

Puleeze, you have lost all perspective as of late.

This isn't the Chielgirl that I know.

Nothing new here with this. Polish fighter pilot squadrons of WWII shot down more enemy aircraft than ANY others during the Battle of Britain and arguably made the decisive contribution that won the day fending off Hitler's plans for invasion. They were even visited a number of times by King George to give them personal accolades but what happened to them?

Why, Stalin needed appeasement so the other allies including the U.S. and Britain at the Yalta conference GAVE him Poland. After the war they were simply forgotten with not even being invited to march during VE day parades lest that **** off Stalin.

Ever hear of the Ghurkas. Arguably the best guerilla fighters ever known. They struck fear into the Nazis unlike any other enemy. Father told tales of his tanks rolling through entire German camps in N.Africa with the Germans still laying in their cots with their throats slit from ear to ear.

Sheesh, why look at Britain, just round up a cadre of Vietnam vets and ask them about ill treatment and they were already citizens of your country.

Why not look at Britain? The closest I get to the US, is Google Earth!

When I started this thread, I was listening to a phone-in radio programme, this was the subject of the day. Without exception, all the callers were in support of the Soldier, and it turned out to be quite an emotive subject.

This Soldier’s plight is back in the news today, and has again become the subject of discussion in the media.

A couple of facts, Fiji is not in the Commonwealth and since they came a Republic are no longer a Crown realm so in future it will be a bit tougher for Fijians to join the UK military.
Why did the Corporal not apply to become a UK citizen years ago.

Yes, the public servants were idiots in taking a charge when the bloke was up before CO and making it a serious criminal offense.

Decidedly unimpressed along with the rest of us in the British Army..

On the plus side the issue should be soon resolved now and he should be granted full British Citizenship and be able to stay. There is currently a fast revue of the transition from military law to civil law on affairs like this and it should be resolved in the next couple of months.

It's a shame that this case was needed to highlight an issue that shouldn't exist but at least this wont happen to others caught in this situation.

It'll be interesting to see if any of the papers print a follow up saying it's been sorted if and when it is. Somehow i doubt it.

Sucks to be him but I don't get it. I've read where British courts have allowed murderers, rapists and child molester foreign nationals to remain because of human rights act and the right to a family life. Basically if you have kids they can't deport you. Why is this different?
