With a population that is 90 percent SMALLER than that of the USA, Canada still managed to be the first country in the world to have a "100 percent fibre optic NATIONAL high speed internet network" and it serves 99 percent of our 34 million people, including those who live in the high arctic regions of the vast place.
We also have a national micro wave transmitter system, for long distance phone services, and every library, and school in the country has not only high speed internet connections, but computers for EVERY elementary age child, in the country. Our high school students are supplied with a lap top, at the begining of grade nine, and it is paid for by the taxpayers of that locality. The result? Our high schools have a 89 percent graduation rate. Oh and by the way, if a kid in Canada wants to drop out of high school, they can't get a drivers' license, until they get to be 21. That REALLY works, as an incentive to STAY in school.
So how did we do all that ? By having a national program, that set definite targets, and was properly funded, and had the support of all the Provincial and Territorial Governments. That target was to have the system in place for the year 2000. And we did it.
That was 12 years ago, and the USA is till arguing about the need for a national high speed internet system? Kind of reminds me of the fact that the USA is the only country in the world, that STILL clings to the Imperial system of measurement, while the rest of the world uses metric.
With 8.3% unemployment and even higher real unemployment, the last thing I am concerned with is high speed internet...
I solved my own unemployment through high speed internet. (At least that's what the provider calls it; in reality it's Ultra Low Speed Internet, but it's better than nothing.) All I ask is that government NOT tax my crappy POS service to provide others with genuine high speed internet.
I just checked the local job office for my state and there are currenlty 23K open positions. You can access those same jobs by going to the job office or by using the internet. If you want to look on craigslist for a job there are libraries that offer free use of a computer.
How many (for example) dishwasher jobs does your local government job office have? Last I looked my local job office had exactly one...and craigslist had a dozen.
Job offices are extremely useless for people seeking low-skill jobs. Job offices are essentially gatekeepers for employers offering (semi-)skilled jobs. The job office screens out underqualified applicants who otherwise would be wasting employers' time and resources.
Then it would be wise for you to move to a location that you can access the internet. Are you saying the government should run hi speed to everyone in a nation this large just in case somebody wants to sell their old golf clubs on ebay?
No, I would be happy if government would drop the idea of taxing my crappy POS half-the-speed-of-dialup service to run hi speed to everyone.
Americans don't want to pay for infrastructure whether it be high speed internet, modernizing the electricity grid or fixing the decaying bridges on our highways. Nobody wants to pay for that stuff today and, even if we were willing to pay, nobody trusts the government or private corps. to do it properly and for a reasonable price.
That was landline. They are wireless now. And if you act quick you can get as many lifeline plans as you can because they don't have any validation in place for you to only get one plan.
