Since post-Civil War radical Republican Reconstruction, the South was solidly Democratic...
until the Democrats became too liberal for the Christian, conservative South.

Are you honestly trying to argue that John Fitzgerald Kennedy would be a good fit with today's Republican Party?!?! The Republican Party that Barry Goldwater found to be too extreme? That Republican Party???

Where is Lloyd Bentson when you need him.

Just curious--when/where did Goldwater say that the Republican party had become 'too extreme.' That would be surpising given his famous quote that 'extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.'

In fact JFK would be well to the right of the average R today, and Nixon would be well to the left of the average D.
Let me see. LBJ was the most liberal U.S. President ever and RFK was challenging him because LBJ was not liberal enough and he thought LBJ was not championing his and his brother's liberal agenda.

Hmm. JFK a "gun nut & NRA life member". Do you really think so? Hmm. How peculiar.

What is also surprising is that Nixon won states like Washington and Oregon which were not his home states. Could any Republican candidate dream of doing so today?

However, I always wonder how Republicans managed to win any Presidential contests before their "Southern strategy". The southern states solidly voted Democratic, even more solidly than they vote R today. Plus, Democrats were always competitive in states like New York, Illinois, and Massachusetts. Which left Republicans with only California as a reliable state with large electoral college. No wonder FDR won 4 consecutive times.

Peculiar but true. JFK was an NRA life member.
Letter to NRA from President John F. Kennedy

He took a personal interest in the switch from the wood/steel M14 rifle to the then innovative plastic/aluminum M16. I read somewhere that Colt presented him with a semi-auto copy that he like to take out on his boat for plinking at floating debris. Don't know for sure if that is really true or not.

JFK also cut taxes, especially on the wealthiest of Americans; remember the top rate had been 91% under Ike. JFK cut it to around 70. Twenty years later, Ronald Reagan modeled his tax cut proposals after JFK's. Last but not least, JFK was a stalwart anti-commie, and while in the US Senate was often an ally of of Republican Joe McCarthy.

Almost certainly, he would be booted from the Democratic party if around today. Or more likely he would voluntarily make the switch, as so many have.

In the whole history of the United States..Conservatives never supported (" Civil Rights for African-American ").. The party of Lincoln was a Liberal Party during the Civil War freeing the slaves , and the Democrates party supported Slavery. President JFK created the (" Peace Corp ") a origanization that conservatives would've never supported.

If anything if JFK were still alive he would be close friends with Ex-POTUS Bill Clinton and current POTUS
Obama , and looking forward for Mrs. Clinton getting her crack at the White House.

The political culture of Oregon, Washington, and California was similar at that time.
CA's Dem Gov. Brown and WA's Dem Gov. Rossellini were similar to OR's GOP Gov. Hatfield.
All three were moderates into building up their states. Political extremes were frowned upon.
The west coast had been Republican ever since the 19th century. 1960, however, was right about the time this changed. That was the last election with the west coast states as "red states" rather than as swing states and then blue states.

It's worth noting however that as late as 1976 Gerald Ford won every western state except Hawaii.

Kennedy would be a Democrat today. He wouldn't be in the liberal wing of the Dems, but he'd be a Dem. Think of the Dems in the Mountain West states and he'd fit right in.

I couldn't see him getting the Dem nomination today, though.
