That's at least partly due to the fact that actual racism goes back even further.
The problem with this argument is that President Johnson's campaign was being dishonest, as are many of the liberal race baiters both here on this forum, and all over the republic.
Let's also remember Barry Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 so he has to accept some responsibility for why he may have been depicted as racist. Goldwater based his decision on preventing the federal government from interfering with the rights of individuals to engage or not engage with certain businesses. Goldwater approved of earlier Civil Rights proposals which suggests he wasn't racist however he did sacrifice his principles to appeal to southern voters. If Goldwater was a person of principle, he would have stood up for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 regardless of who it appealed to. I live in Arizona and respect many of Goldwater's libertarian views and overall, I think he was a great politician and fine person but he truly made a colossal error in judgement when he opposed the Civil Rights Act.

I find this post hard to fathom. Here's a guy who pushed for desegregation of the military long before it was popular, and ended discriminatory practices in his family business. Yet he "has to accept some responsibility" for falsely being called a racist because you don't like the way he voted on a particular bill?
Unbelievable. Does he also have to "accept some responsibility" for the other aspects of LBJ's campaign--again, ranked by a historian as the dirtiest in US history?

Look, at the end of the day, the south (and much of the north) was engaged in violent oppression based on skin color, and the US federal government was, in essence, the only available means to end it. And Berry Goldwater was running for the head of the enforcement arm of the federal government. His family business is of virtually no consequence, compared to the poll taxes, seperate and wildly unequal facilities, and state-sponsored violence, that he was against ending.
It's like seeing someone being beaten with a bat, and saying "we'll, but if I call the cops, then those guys with the bats will get arrested, and wouldn't that be a shame?" No, it wouldn't.
Not every conservative is racist, but seriously, how many people voting Republican actually care about black people?
Well appraently the top Dem, Obama himself doesn't care black people. Young blacks have been getting killed in gun violence by the dozen for quite some time but Obama only felt moved to take action on guns after a bunch of rich white kids in Connecticut got shot.
A false accusation of racism is by definition not due to "actual racism."
Nonsense.
A false accusation or racism can bear no pretense to credibility without actual racism. You can't attribute your dog's disappearance to a chupacabra if there is no such thing.
