They would like Waste Management to raise their salaries to meet the pay of garbage drivers. With overtime, recycle drivers make about $58,000 a year. If requests are met, they could make as much as $98,000 a year with overtime.
No progress in effort to end garbage and recycling drivers' strike - Local News - Seattle, WA - NBCNews.com

Just to put that number into perspective; the minimum break off point to be disqualified for low income housing is $45,500 for 1 person, $65,000 for a family of 4. Seattle ain't a cheap place to live, that's for sure. Basically, some of those truck drvers are low income people.
Eligibility - Low-Income Public Housing - Seattle Housing Authority

This would be a good time to hire those on extended unemployment to take the jobs some are unwilling to do.

My My, this isn't the type of economy you want to be pulling stunts like this. They probably have a liitle more leverage than the CAT strikers though, a weeks worth of garbage get's nasty real quick if piled up.

In the current economy it wouldn't seem to be the prudent time to be asking for such a substantial increase.. Given the current unemployment rate in the US.

Once i worked on this type of trucks for the local trash company. I was stunned to find out how much money the trash companies made, and the politics of the entire thing.

It's safe to say that if the trash stops so does every other possible thing. I recall many years ago NYC trash stopped but not for long. About the time the trash reached the 2nd floor windows the company got what it wanted.

If you are looking for work and mean it i suggest you go seek a job in this sector. There is no great names no big documents to hand on the wall and it will smell bad, but you will get good money.

I know that welding in a broken truck was good hard work and it stunk to hell and back, but as a welder i was paid real well on a road call. Sometimes i was ankel deep in rain water in the mess and welding with a office secretary holding the 30 amp 220 plug........ Want $$$$$?

And this should be of concern? Why?

Waste Management is a for profit making company and if their profitability is sufficient to afford the demands of their labor force, what seems to be the problem. Its capitalism at its finest.

That's why the garbage pickup business has traditionally been infested with mafioso in some cities.
