Sorry, I felt your statement was immature. You'll reward someone by telling them what you do, eh? LOL!

BTW, you must have me confused with someone else. I don't have any grandkids. My oldest daughter just got married in Sept. Or was that just a "mature" way of saying you think I'm an old lady?

What do you do?
I'm a rocket scientist.

After about 100 times of answering this and having MOST people look at them with a puzzled, ""Uh. What does that mean. Do. I mean, I can't ask him what he does, I can't even add 2+2 together and would have no clue what it is they are talking about. What do I do now." Look on their face, the person has probably given up answering truthfully.

As I said, I'm a police officer. I don't tell people what I do. Most run to the bathroom and dump their stash. The rest look at the drink they are holding and say, "Oh ****. I'm drinking and driving. Now I am going to be arrested." I could go on and on about stupid questions I get and statements. So now? I don't tell them what I do for a living. My next door neighbors don't even know what I do for a living.

Has nothing to do with being ashamed, et al. It has to do with saving me from the most stupid, inane, and inappropriate questions known to mankind.
Just say "national security".

Even though you're putting me on ignore, maybe someone will quote this. It wasn't the word reward, it was the idea behind it, that if someone doesn't ask, you'll be so generous or whatever as to tell them. Are you in the witness protection program or something? I have a friend who used to work for the NSA who would say that much, no more, about his job.

Oh trust me. I've tried. MANY TIMES. I've done everything to deflect, change, etc the issue and I get hounded by people. HOUNDED. "Why won't you tell us what you do? Are you ashamed?" I've heard it all, seen it all, which is the point to my original replies.

If you have, please people don't take this wrong, a dull, or simple job, its EASY to say what you do. Have something that is controversial. How about this? Say you are an abortion doctor in some places and see where that gets you. Fact is, the general public, in GENERAL do not like the police. Therefore, it causes problems in a social setting.

Last Sept I went to Peru on a guided tour. 19 days; the wife and I (she is a police officer also). 32 people on this tour and when the "dreaded question" came up, it was, "Oh. What does your wife think of that?" "She is a police officer too." People disappeared LIKE FLIES. Its not ALWAYS the person; their profession, many of which people do not like, has a lot to do with it.

You are in a social setting and who wants to hear from a mortician? For the rocket scientist people? Uh, I doubt these people are engaging themselves with "normal" people. Normal people could care less what a rocket scientist does and CANNOT even understand it. If you can't tell them who the last 5 winners of American Idol is, they don't care WHAT you do. You are boring to them.

Just say you're "in law enforcement, what about you?" with a smile. if they press you, especially without offering any of their own information, then say "well, i'm not obligated to you, especially since you've said nothing about what YOU do." (with a smile. if you're feeling a bit zany you can say "Quid pro quo, Clarice") Also: Just for the heck of it: I've noticed people who think it's fine to ask the question 30 seconds after meeting you are also the type who love to try to control conversations and interactions they have with other people. doesn't work with me. I get off on not giving them what they want.

Well, it's a good thing working for the JPL has nothing to do with money, politics, religion or sex.

I work in an industry I love and maybe you don't want to talk about it, but I have no qualms about it at all.
