Locked up in hospitals??
From the link
"Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications."

Can one now just go grab formula from the kitchen in a hospital??

One would think conservatives would be for this! Get a baby hooked on formula at birth, and then you're paying for it with WIC and food stamps. Formula isn't cheap, and babies are more likely to get ill due to the lack of immune system support that they otherwise would receive from breast milk. There are, of course, cases where formula is necessary but those are few and far between. And I know many women who are part of breast milk circles where other women pump and freeze milk for women who have cancer or cannot produce milk.

Many women feel that formula is pushed on them at hospitals. Rather than have formula right out the gate, there should be more focus on focusing on the latch and teaching women how to pump, as well as their employment rights to pump. It's cheaper for the state (for those women who are on assistance), cheaper for the women paying for it themselves, and healthier for both mother and baby.

This is absolutely none of this man's business!!!!

Some women cannot produce enough milk! Formula is there for that!

Some women have disorders that cause their milk to be contaminated! Formula works for that!!

This is waaaaay outta this man's realm!!

And most women do not have those issues. Formula works for laziness too! And I don't want to pay for that. Conservatives often say that food stamps shouldn't prepared foods - so why does it cover formula for women NOT in those categories? Formula costs over $1000 for the first year, and can get much higher for high end formulas (like the ones formula companies stock hospitals with for marketing purposes).

It is not in society's best interest on ANY level to push formula as a first step, like many hospitals seem to do (at least according to my coworkers who have had children recently). If it will save NYC money to keep formula only for women who absolutely need it or request it, rather than making it the easy option, then by all means go for it. No one is going to be deprived of it in the long term.

So, the government goes out of its way to provide free formula to single mothers.
Then the government decides that breastfeeding is better than formula and comes up with a program.

Why doesn't government just end giving away free formula ?

The entire point of the thread is that it is not the role of a Mayor to decide these things for the mothers or to dictate hospital policy.

I guess the far left is only pro-choice when it comes to aborting the lives of innocent humans in the womb. Otherwise, not so much.

By providing lots of brand name logo'ed freebies in the hospital to new mommies, it could be said that formula use is being encouraged.
This is something they are agreeing to stop.
IMO expectant mothers already know before they get there which option they are going to pick.(Maybe not which brand of products which is what the freebies are for)
This is just more useless work being foisted on the hospitals.

What is it with this control freak Bloomberg who after banning big gulp soda cups, trans fat and salt he now is going after infant formula. That's right, Nanny Bloomberg thinks he has the authority to tell women when to pull a tit out to suckle their child!

The mothers have had nine months to decide if they want to breast feed or not, give them some credit.
