This isn't true in Britain, although I believe it is true in France and other mainland European countries.

In Britain, schools are out during August, but businesses remain open.

The Olympics is creating a “ghost town” effect in central London as visitors who would normally flock to the capital’s shops, hotels and theaters stay away, casting doubt on expectations of a short-term economic boost from the games.

The games have attracted as many as 100,000 foreign visitors to London – more than in previous Olympics. But, on its own, that number significantly lags behind the estimated 300,000 foreign tourists who could be expected in a typical year.

Suffering a net profits loss was one of the reasons some people in Chicago did not want the Olympics there.
Both numbers, the 100K and 300K are way off. The attendence in the first three days was 2.1 million. Of course the Olympic visitors are not there to shop, but to watch the games.

That's funny. I just had an image of Chicago the current murder capital hosting the Olympics this year.

Pity the poor Olympic tourist who ventures off to "Explore" Chicago.

But they still have to eat and sleep somewhere.

I think they mean 300,000 during the same time period as the Olympics. Something weird is going on, have you seen the lack of people sitting in the seats watching the events?

Well, at least the WWII vets would be wise to rethink notions of exploring Chicago.
