The dangers of modifying a Constitution by "re-interpreting" what it says into something different, instead of modifying it by passing concretely written amendments, were known back in colonial time, in fact long before our Constitution was written.
George Washington warned against doing that in his Farewell Address. Not being a very PC guy, he called this plan to "re-interpret" the Constitution what it really was: "Usurpation". And he pointed out that, even if such "re-interpretation" might appear to give a favorable result for one person or group today, it must be avoided since it was the favorite tool of people who wanted to impose tyrannical governments.
"If in the opinion of the People, the distribution or modification of the Constitutional powers be in any particular wrong, let it be corrected by an amendment in the way in which the Constitution designates. But let there be no change by usurpation; for though this, in one instance, may be the instrument of good, it is the customary weapon by which free governments are destroyed. The precedent must always greatly overbalance in permanent evil any partial or transient benefit which the use can at any time yield."

I wish there was a requirement that to run for President of the USA, you had to have worked for 200 days in the private sector and served at least 200 days in the Military so we wouldn't wind up with a mendacious Charlatan who says he has visited all 57 States and thanked so many CORPSE MEN....
