Could they not find something better than a serpent. The biblical implications alone would cause pause. Of course in the bible, the serpent symbolizes evil. Is this how the tea party wishes people to see them?

He's a liberal. We're lucky he didn't think it was a jump rope or a licorice string.

One of the symbols in the American Revolution was a picture of a snake with the caption, "Don't Tread On Me".

It referred to the idea that government should leave people alone and let them live their lives; and that no harm would come as long as they did. But if they tried to mess with the people, they'd get hurt badly.

You don't have to be an expert in American history to realize that the "Tea Party" is an astro-turf corporate funded fraudulent movement.
